The Vegas Way

03/09/2024 at 6:04am EST

from Jesse Granger of The Athletic,

McCrimmon is well aware of the polarizing reputation he and his organization have acquired.

“Contrary to popular belief, we don’t go after every good player,” he said. “We go after good players we like, good players we identify, and opportunities we identify.”

McCrimmon, Vegas president of hockey operations George McPhee and their pro scouting staff sure seem to like a lot of players.

Mark Stone, Jack Eichel, Max Pacioretty, Ivan Barbashev, Alec Martinez and Chandler Stephenson were all traded for in the last six years. Now, add Hanifin and Hertl to the list.

A lot of front-office executives probably like those players, and with good reason. The difference is that McCrimmon and his staff find a way to get the players they want on their team at an incredible rate — one that is seemingly much higher than other GMs around the NHL.

Why?

“It’s hard to say,” McCrimmon replied. “You have conversations with people and it depends on your approach. We pay. I think that’s part of it. We have made some good deals for other teams as well.”

The Golden Knights haven’t been afraid to send high-end draft picks and prospects out in order to acquire players they believe in, players in the prime of their careers.

The Story Of Jesus Lopez, The Spanish PxP Voice Of The Vegas Golden Knights

02/12/2024 at 10:07am EST

from Amalie Benjamin of the NHL's website,

In the snippet of video, shaky and shot diagonally and not entirely in focus, the voice comes through loud and clear and full of emotion.

“That’s my dad,” Jorge Lopez yells on the crowded Las Vegas Strip with his phone trained on a passing bus. “That’s my dad right there.”

Jesus Lopez, the Spanish language play-by-play broadcaster for the Vegas Golden Knights, has unfurled a Mexican flag atop the bus and is shaking it as his son hits record. It is days after the Golden Knights captured the Stanley Cup last June, besting the Florida Panthers in five games in the best-of-7 Final, and earning the franchise’s first title six years into its existence.

“It’s as if he had a second life,” Jorge said, marveling at who his father is, at what he’s done.

It’s as unlikely a story as there is in hockey, that of the Golden Knights and that of Lopez, whose background in hockey was nonexistent when he came to the United States from Mexico, when the threats and violence, which he believes came from La Familia Michoacan, a Mexican cartel, altered the course of his life and his family.

The Vegas Golden Knights Remain A Motivated Team

12/18/2023 at 8:47am EST

from Ed Graney of the Las Vegas Review-Journal,

This is a team, however, used to handling goalie injuries. It seems whoever has been in net over the last year has done the job. Hasn’t made much of a difference whose name is on the back of a sweater.

It’s a fact that could be tested yet again depending on Thompson’s health.

“I think he’s going to be just fine,” Cassidy said.

These are the games in which you need to find something within, and there’s no question the Buffalo loss helped in that realm. Even when the Knights earned a comfortable lead in the second period Sunday, they kept pushing forward.

“I think we motivate ourselves,” said center Nicolas Roy, who had a power-play goal. “We have a lot to play for. We want to go back-to-back, so there’s obviously some big expectations. You’re not always going to have the same energy every night. You have to find it. You have to grind through.

“Everybody goes through it. Obviously, we can’t wait to make the playoffs, but you have to go game-to-game and try to get your game in the right place.”

So now it’s back to the road for games at Carolina, Tampa Bay and Florida before Christmas, back to the grind, back to finding different types of motivation depending on the day and opponent.

Scary thing is, the Golden Knights could play much better than we’ve seen the last week.

Just the reality of going through those 82 before the real fun begins.

The Stanley Cup Champs Get Their Rings

10/09/2023 at 7:36pm EDT

from the Vegas Golden Knights,

The ring’s features include:

  • Approximately 12 carats of white and yellow diamonds, with the yellow diamonds used to represent the Golden Knights’ name.
  • A detachable top that can be worn as a pendant that, when removed, reveals the interior of the team’s T-Mobile Arena home. The center ice logo looks as it did for the 2023 Stanley Cup Final, and stars denote the location of each of the team’s nine goals in the Cup-clinching Game 5.
  • Team mottos “Vegas Born” and “Always Advance” are on each side of the ring, connected by the distinctive Las Vegas skyline.
  • An engraving reading “It’s Knight Time” on the back of the pendant and another inside the band of the ring that reads “Cup in Six,” referencing Owner Bill Foley’s bold prediction before his six-year-old expansion team began play.
  • 16 stars on the front of the ring representing the team’s 16 playoff victories, while the 67 white diamonds set on to the primary logo’s helmet honor the total wins in the regular season and playoffs. The 32 diamonds on the inner bezel represent the NHL’s 32 teams.
  • Six stones surround a diamond Stanley Cup, representing the franchise’s six seasons and set in a star shape that matches the team’s “Vegas Strong” banner that honors the victims of 1 October. The .54 carats of diamonds on the Stanley Cup pay tribute to the team’s 54 all-time playoff wins.

Mark Stone's Back Issues May Be Behind Him

09/23/2023 at 6:59am EDT

from Danny Webster of the Las Vegas Sun,

There will be whispers about Mark Stone’s health until convinced otherwise. That’s not news to the Golden Knights’ captain.

Undergoing one back surgery is excruciating. Two in less than a year, the second one 43 games into a season that was on pace to be the best of his career? Whispers might be putting it mildly.

With questions of his career in doubt, Stone answered them emphatically three months after his second back procedure, putting up 24 points (11 goals, 13 assists) in the playoffs to help the Golden Knights capture the Stanley Cup. Not to mention the fractured wrist he suffered in the Cup-clinching game, then scoring a hat trick in the 9-3 win.

Stone assures the wrist wasn’t as big of a deal as it was portrayed. As far as his back goes, it’s been a while since Stone has felt this good.

“I’m really excited with where I’m at,” Stone said. “It’s probably the best I’ve felt in three, four years.”

Vegas Wasn't The Perfect Team But They Were Close To It When It Counted

08/21/2023 at 2:47pm EDT

from Jesse Granger of The Athletic,

Cassidy raised his hand high above his head.

“I think before, as a coach, you’re always thinking you have to be ‘here’ all the time,” he said. “There are a lot of highs and lows, and you just have to find your game at the right time, and we were able to do that.”

Cassidy referred to the Golden Knights as an “imperfect team” at different times throughout the season. Vegas finished with the fifth-best record in the league in the regular season. The team was 14th in scoring and 11th in goals against. The power play ranked 18th and the penalty kill 19th. The Golden Knights didn’t have a player in the top-70 for league-wide scoring.

Nothing about the team’s statistics screamed “Stanley Cup champions” but all of the pieces were there, and they came together at the exact right time. What stood out most to Cassidy about his team’s play during the Cup run was the timeliness of its best games.

“We were close to perfect in the second period of Game 5 (to clinch the Stanley Cup against Florida).” he said. “Game 6 in Dallas. The second period in the clinching game in Edmonton. The third period (of Game 5) in Winnipeg. All four clinching games, I thought we dominated.”

Vegas won its close-out games by a ridiculous combined score of 24-6. A championship isn’t necessarily determined by the best overall team, but by which team plays its best hockey at the right time of year. This isn’t a major revelation, but it certainly drives the point home for the Golden Knights, and it’s a valuable lesson they may need in the near future.

Mark Stone's Day With The Cup

07/25/2023 at 8:15pm EDT

from Jacob Stoller of The Hockey News,

While the Vegas Golden Knights are synonymous with grand reveals, the start of their captain's day with the Stanley Cup was anything but theatrical.

It was humble, just like Winnipeg’s middle-class neighborhood of Westwood, where Stone grew up and left a mark on the community throughout his upbringing and NHL career so far.

Before a black limousine bus ushered Stone, his family and the Stanley Cup to his childhood rink, the vibe in the Kirkfield Westwood Community Centre parking lot had a bit more Golden Knights apparel than usual in Manitoba. While Stone’s event was not publicized, word of mouth spread throughout the neighborhood. A crowd of no larger than 30 people gathered outside the community center’s rink, Keith Bodley Arena, to get a glimpse of Lord Stanley and the captain who made this moment happen.

When the limousine pulled up, Stone was the last to step off – and he did so with a beaming smile while holding the Stanley Cup over his head. He carried the Cup into the building – past the canteen in the foyer entryway that he and his teammates took turns running as young kids – and headed right for the rink.

“This is my barn,” Stone told the two keepers of the Cup accompanying him. “It hasn’t changed a lick.”

The Vegas Golden Knights Have A Few Decisions To Make

06/18/2023 at 2:37pm EDT

from Ken Wiebe of Sportsnet,

The good news for the Golden Knights is that they’ve got the majority of their core pieces under contract for at least one more season and most for multiple campaigns.

The list of pending unrestricted free agents includes forwards Ivan Barbashev, Phil Kessel, Teddy Blueger along with goaltenders Adin Hill, Laurent Brossoit and Jonathan Quick.

Barbashev was unequivocally the best deadline acquisition made by any NHL team this season and while it would take some salary cap gymnastics to keep him in the fold, you can be sure the Golden Knights would love to keep him around.

The biggest area of uncertainty is in goal, where Logan Thompson (who was in the NHL All-Star Game before he got hurt) is under contract for two more seasons on a contract close to the league minimum and Robin Lehner remains a big question mark after missing the entire season with an injury despite having two more seasons under contract at $5 million.

As for the pending UFAs for 2024, that list includes Conn Smythe winner Jonathan Marchessault, Chandler Stephenson, Michael Amadio and William Carrier up front, along with defencemen Alec Martinez and Ben Hutton.

The Golden Knights found the right mix in 2022-23 and you can expect they’ll use a similar recipe moving forward.
