SEATTLE (Dec. 30, 2023) – A look at the 2024 Discover NHL Winter Classic® “By the Numbers.”

1 – The Seattle Kraken will make their outdoor game debut, doing so in a venue located just three miles from Climate Pledge Arena. Seattle will become the 29th NHL franchise to contest an outdoor game and the youngest NHL franchise to compete in such a game.

2 – The 2024 Discover NHL Winter Classic will be the second outdoor game for the Vegas Golden Knights, following a loss to the Colorado Avalanche in the 2021 NHL Outdoors at Lake Tahoe. Reigning Stanley Cup champions are 5-1-0 in outdoor games.

3 – Musical acts native to Seattle will take the stage during the 2024 Discover NHL Winter Classic: Heart, Sir Mix-a-Lot and Nikhil Bagga.

6 – Types of pitches depicted in T-Mobile Park’s “Six Pitches,” a series of metal sculptures depicting hands gripping baseballs along the west façade of the Mariners parking garage.

9 – Number worn by Golden Knights forward Jack Eichel, who is tied for the team lead in scoring with 40 points (16-24—40) through games played on December 28.

11 – Members of the Mariners Hall of Fame (induction year in brackets): Felix Hernandez (2023), Ichiro Suzuki (2022), Jamie Moyer (2015), Lou Piniella (2014), Ken Griffey Jr. (2013), Randy Johnson (2012), Dan Wilson (2012), Edgar Martinez (2007), Jay Buhner (2004), Dave Niehaus (2000) and Alvin Davis (1997).

11 – Seattle legends across three sports will appear during the second intermission: Jay Buhner, Jamal Crawford, Matt Hasselbeck, Walter Jones, Steve Largent, Marshawn Lynch, Edgar Martinez, Jack Sikma, Isaiah Thomas, Lenny Wilkens and Dan Wilson.

13 – A total of 13 players born in Washington state have dressed in at least one NHL game (regular season or playoffs), including Kraken forward Kailer Yamamoto, as well as Stanley Cup winners Wayne Hicks, Tyler Johnson and T.J. Oshie. Yamamoto and his brother, Keanu, were taught how to skate by Johnson’s mother, Debbie.

19 – Number worn by Kraken forward Jared McCann, who leads the team in goals this season and is set to contest his second outdoor game, and first since playing alongside current teammates Brian Dumoulin and Justin Schultz with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2019 NHL Stadium Series at Lincoln Financial Field. McCann was a member of four different NHL franchises before being claimed by Seattle in the 2021 Expansion Draft and currently is the team’s all-time leader in goals and points.

29 – Number worn by Kraken defenseman Vince Dunn, who currently leads the team in points (30) and ranks fifth amongst all defensemen in League scoring through games played on December 29.

30 – MLB teams represented in T-Mobile Park’s “Quilts,” an artwork collection in the main concourse at the right field gate made from recycled metal, including license plates.

39 – The 2024 Discover NHL Winter Classic will mark the 39th NHL regular-season outdoor game contested. Of the previous 38 games that have been played, 23 of those have been hosted within football stadiums, 12 have been played inside baseball stadiums, two played atop a golf course, and one inside a soccer stadium.

53 – Length, in feet, of the world’s largest mobile rink refrigeration unit, specially built for outdoor games conducted by the NHL.

243 – Number of ice pans under the rink at T-Mobile Park, each measuring 30” x 340” in size.

262 – Number of hits by Mariners star Ichiro Suzuki in 2004, a single-season MLB record previously set in 1920 by George Sisler (257). Sisler was later an MLB teammate of Jim Riley, who is believed to be the only individual to play in both the NHL and MLB. Riley skated eight seasons with the Metropolitans in the PCHA (while playing baseball in the summer) before signing in 1927 with the Black Hawks, with whom he played three games before being traded to the Detroit Cougars.

300 – Ton capacity of the refrigeration trailer that will keep the ice cool at T-Mobile Park.

350 – Gallons of paint used to make the ice at T-Mobile Park white.

1,002 – Number of players and coaches who have participated in the NHL’s 38 regular-season outdoor games to date (858 skaters, 99 goaltenders, 45 head coaches).

1,114 – The approximate distance, in miles, between Las Vegas and Seattle.

1991 – Year the first outdoor game between NHL teams took place, less than two miles from the Golden Knights’ home arena, on Sept. 27, 1991. The Los Angeles Kings scored five unanswered goals to overcome a 2-0 deficit and earn a preseason win against the New York Rangers, on a rink built over the Caesars Palace parking lot.

1993 – Year that Sir Mix-a-Lot, who will perform during player introductions, earned a GRAMMY Award for “Best Rap Solo Performance.”

2013 – Year that Heart was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, nearly four decades after their formation as the first female-fronted rock band. Helmed by Ann and Nancy Wilson, Heart will headline the first intermission presented by Ticketmaster performance.

6,500 – Square feet of wooden docks spread across the field at T-Mobile Park as part of the décor for the 2024 Discover NHL Winter Classic.

11,876 – Hockey participation in Washington state has nearly doubled since the Kraken’s inaugural campaign, going from 6,793 players in 2020-21 (the final season before Seattle’s debut) to 11,876 in 2022-23. That includes a jump from 943 to 1,936 among female participants.

44,800 – Square feet of printed water graphics used on the field at T-Mobile Park for the 2024 Discover NHL Winter Classic.

1,907,053 – Total attendance of NHL regular-season outdoor games entering the 2024 Discover NHL Winter Classic (an average of 52,974 per game when fans could attend; 36 of 38 games played).

30,000,000 – Visit Seattle calculates the economic impact of the 2024 Discover NHL Winter Classic will be $30 million.
