Paying David Perron

04/26/2024 at 10:54am EDT

from Bob Duff of Detroit Hockey Now,

David Perron is making it abundantly clear that he wants to remain with the Detroit Red Wings. GM Steve Yzerman is on the record as suggesting that he’s not opposed to the idea.

Why then, does Perron playing another season in Detroit seem to be such an improbable outcome?

“I like it here,” Perron said. “It’s a pretty special place.”

For his part, Yzerman also believes that what Perron has brought to the team is pretty special.

“It’s a player I have to give strong consideration to bring him back,” Yzerman admitted.

Everyone seems to be on the same page. So why does it feel like they still might end up turning the page?

The root cause of the problem is the thing that people are always describing as the root of all evil – money.

Will the Red Wings have enough of it left over to be able to pay Perron?

-If we lose Kane, think about signing Perron again.

-If Kane re-signs, cut Perron loose.

Having two guys with no legs is just too much, imo.

I like Perron, he gave us some truly memorable goals at the end of the season.  He was one of the hardest workers all year.

BUT - he committed a ton of penalties, had some notable defensive mistakes, and was evidently an ineffective leader during the losing streaks.  And frankly, the years are catching up to him.

Im ok if he comes back, but I lean toward cutting him loose.  We have some young players that are ready for their turn.  Give it to them.

I know he's gotten some flack, but the guy is SMART.  Listen/read any interview with him, and he absolutely gets "it".  I have no doubt he'll fill a front office role after he's done playing.

That said, if there's a way to keep him for the right price, there's good reason to.  I think he has shown his cards plenty well that he loves it here and wants to stay.  He's at the end of his career; I don't think he's getting more than a one year deal anywhere else.  Why would he want to uproot his family for one year somewhere else?

I would give him a one year deal if they can find a way to make it work.

NateATreKronor

I'm with ya. If he'll come back for something like 3M, then absolutely.

I've also never seen anyone control the wall like he does. He manages to win something like 80% of his board battles. Its absurd and I love it.

Shanny_Fan

Don't do it! It seemed like for every goal he scored he cost us two against this year with bad penalties, brutal turnovers or complete defensive ineptitude. It will only get worse as he gets older. He may give good interviews off the ice but he's got the hockey IQ of a toaster on the ice.

My problem is that any hockey player who wears Red Wings uniform, I immediately like him, so I want to see all of them back, but realistically I would lean towards letting Perron go for the reasons mentioned in all the posts above. Especially I agree with offensive zone penalties and where was his leadership when Larkin was out and we lost 7 in a row including being absolutely listless against Arizona, twice. But a very nice guy. If maybe $2.5 mil per year on a 4th line? But it's unrealistic

Offensively, Perron took a step back this year, and his effectiveness on the power play, where he shined before, became a little more iffy.  I love his gusto and think he's a great guy and player, but with the kids starting to come up, unless he's willing to take a reduced role and salary, I don't see it as a good fit.

Everyone points to Perron's penchant for taking penalties, and I get it. He had the second most penalty minutes on the team (55). The issue for me is the kind of penalties he takes (holding seems to be his biggest bugaboo) and when he takes them. They seem to come when the game is on the line and he's gotten beaten (again) by an opposing player. That's only going to get worse as he gets another year older.

So, while I like the guy and I love his compete level, I'd keep Sprong (at probably half the price) and use him in Perron's spot on the PP. Or even better, let Perron go and replace him with Berggren (at probably a third of the price).

HippyDaveOlderThanChelios

Yep.  Can't have Johnny Burgers playing on the bottom 2 lines anymore; at least not for the start of the season.

He's expendable but for the right price I'd take him for another year. I'd rather keep Spring between the two, but he's going to want a raise.

evileyegodblender

Sprong obviously got in the coach's doghouse. I don't see the Wings bringing him back when there desire is to improve team defense.

Girls require time and money.Girls = Time × Money
Time is money.Time = Money
Therefore:Girls = Money × Money = (Money)2
Money is the root of all evilMoney = √Evil
Therefore:Girls = (√Evil)2
And we are forced to conclude that:Girls = Evil

Mattimeodca

money isn't the root of evil.... the actual verse is For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

Am I forced to conclude that you are a misogynist, and, a giant asshole? Just asking for all Girls.😉

Um, have you been morning-drinking, dca? Or has some woman really pissed you off. :-)
