Trade Options For The Detroit Red Wings

05/07/2024 at 11:51am EDT

In a paywall article, Kevin Allen of Detroit Hockey Now discusses four possible trade options, Holl, Maatta, Husso and Fabbri.

He also states this...

Throughout Yzerman’s career, he has managed to pull off trades that the hockey world did not see coming. Would he trade defenseman Jake Walman whose trade value has probably never been better. Could Yzerman find a taker on Andrew Copp’s $5.6 million-per-season cap hit for the next three seasons? Both of those players have modified no-trade clauses.

With Yzerman, it’s not about whether he likes the player or not. It’s always about improving his team. His managerial career as been tales of the unexpected:

I personally think Walman's value is almost at all time low now after he could not crack our top 6 in the last month of the season

My take is that during the 8 game losing streak Walman was pinching, shooting from everywhere and generally trying to do everything himself offensively which resulted in some bad defense. Near the end of that losing streak he got injured and missed some time. When he came back he looked to be less than healthy and Lalonde moved him around in an effort to either ease him back into the lineup or to get decent chemistry throughout the D which was still struggling. The whole d core never really fully stabilized by the end of the season, Wallman included.

When healthy next fall I'd see no reason why he couldn't get right back to where he was at for the first 2/3rds of the season.

Right - the big question is, why?  They never really said what was going on, they just pushed him aside and he disappeared.  Was it injury?  Was there something else at play?

I'm not anticipating anything exciting this year.  I know the Detroit writers have to find a way to fill space during these long summers, but talking about trades Stevie made years ago with Tampa only has me yawning.

The only thing I'm hoping and expecting is to grab a few late round picks for the rights to guys we aren't planning to bring back.

I have free agent fatigue. I want to see prospects!

I see Matta and Fabri being traded to free up cap room for Raymond and Seider. Also to bring in Stamkos and maybe Lindholm as our second line.
