John Tortorella Suspended And Fined

03/10/2024 at 7:04pm EDT

NEW YORK (March 10, 2024) – Philadelphia Flyers head coach John Tortorella has been suspended for two games and fined $50,000 for unprofessional conduct directed at the officials by refusing to leave the bench area after being assessed a game misconduct at 10:49 of the first period of NHL Game No. 1,016 on Saturday, March 9, NHL Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell announced today.

Tortorella will miss the Flyers’ next two games — March 12 versus the Sharks and March 14 versus the Maple Leafs.

The fine money goes to the NHL Foundation.

The Philadelphia Flyers Are Proving Doubters Wrong

02/24/2024 at 9:08am EST

from Greg Wyshynski of ESPN,

Joel Farabee didn't understand the negativity.

As he walked into Philadelphia Flyers training camp last September, he saw a locker room that had become even more tight-knit over the summer. He saw key players like center Sean Couturier, now their captain, and winger Cam Atkinson finally healthy again. He saw a coach in John Tortorella who demanded effort every game -- the last guy you'd expect to lord over a last-place season.

Yet the Flyers had been effectively counted out in preseason predictions. Their .457 points percentage in 2022-23 was seen as a harbinger of rough seasons to come. And it wasn't coming just from media or fans: Team management had candidly communicated that the Flyers were rebuilding and not a Stanley Cup contender this season.

But that's not what Farabee saw before the season. That's not what a lot of his teammates saw either. And they weren't happy about what they felt was disrespect from the rest of the NHL.

"We just came in with that F.U. attitude," Farabee told ESPN. "Just seeing all the media, and everyone else, having us in the bottom five or bottom three in the league, whatever it was, I think it just fueled a fire and motivated us to stick it the doubters."

Through 57 games, the doubters have been stuck.

The Grinding Flyers

12/29/2023 at 12:06pm EST

from Carol Schram of The Hockey News,

If you thought the Philadelphia Flyers were grinding down their opponents during their first 33 games of the season, you ain't seen nothing yet.

"If we're going to survive, you have to check at this time of year – you just change your mindset, here, about the small little battles in the game," said Philadelphia coach John Tortorella after his team came out of the holiday break with a disciplined 4-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena on Thursday.

"Quite honestly, before the break, I didn't think we were playing hard enough, but I left them alone because we were finding ways to win," he added. "Now we're going to coach them. I think we need to be a harder team to play against and hopefully we can build on the checking tonight and bring it into tomorrow night's game."

It's hard to argue with Tortorella's point. The Flyers' last game before Christmas was a wild 7-6 shootout loss in Detroit on Dec. 22, where Philadelphia came back from a 5-1 deficit to take a late lead before settling for a point.

Thursday's outing looked a lot more like textbook Torts, whose 723rd career NHL win as a coach broke a tie with Alain Vigneault for 10th place all-time.

Standing Out On The Flyers' Defense

12/22/2023 at 9:35am EST

from Sam Carchidi of Philly Hockey Now,

Despite losing to Nashville on Thursday, the rebuilding Philadelphia Flyers are one of the NHL’s feel-good stories. They have points in nine of their last 10 games, sit in second place in the Metropolitan Division, and are allowing just 2.66 goals per game — sixth in the 32-team NHL.

Quietly, the Flyers’ second defensive pairing has played a major role in the team’s stunning 18-11-3 start.

One of the defenders on that pairing, Nick Seeler, was so disenchanted when the Chicago Blackhawks sent him to the minors three years ago that he left hockey and contemplated another occupation.

Seeler’s partner with the Flyers, Sean Walker, was coming off a disappointing season with Los Angeles and was considered a “throw-in” in the three-way, offseason deal that sent Ivan Provorov to Columbus.

And, yet, 32 games into this wacky season, Seeler, a No. 6 or No. 7 defenseman during most of his NHL life, and Walker are not just considered serviceable, but they are thriving on a defense that is has played beyond expectations.

Way beyond.

Medical Issues Force Nolan Patrick To Retire

12/20/2023 at 11:04am EST

from The Daily Faceoff,

Nolan Patrick, the 2017 No. 2 overall pick whose career was marred with injuries, has reported retired from professional hockey at the age of 25.

The news was revealed in an Instagram post for The Power Play, a hockey coaching and mentorship program organized by Jayce Hawryluk, who currently plays for Liberec Bili Tygri in the Czech Extraliga, the highest pro league in Czechia. Patrick will be a skills specialist, video coach and a mentor for the group.

Patrick, who scored 91 goals and 113 assists for 204 points in three seasons with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League, missed most of his draft season, 2016-17, with sports hernia and upper-body injuries. Despite missing most of the regular season, Patrick was ranked the No. 1 North American skater by NHL Central Scouting.

The Philadelphia Flyers took Patrick with the second-overall pick in that 2017 NHL Entry Draft. During his rookie season, he scored 13 goals and 17 assists for 30 points, almost replicating the numbers in his sophomore season with 13 goals and 18 assists for 31 points.

Before the 2019-20 season, Patrick began to feel headaches and was diagnosed with a migraine disorder, believed to be an inherited genetic disorder. He would miss the entire season.

All Keith Jones

12/05/2023 at 2:16pm EST

from Dan Rosen of the NHL's website,

It's been almost seven months since you were hired. What has it been like? What is this job like for you?

"It's felt natural, which is kind of surprising to me. It's been invigorating. It's been challenging. But it's been really a lot about people and something that has felt so far comfortable but at the same time something I don't take for granted. I feel very fortunate to be in this position."

What is challenging about the job?

"Just knowing that we want our team to be a playoff team consistently and a Stanley Cup contender down the road, and knowing what it takes from watching the last 23 years of Stanley Cup Playoff hockey and knowing that we have a lot of work in front of us. We're trying really on a day-to-day basis to come up with ideas and plan to eventually get us to be that type of a team. That's the challenge."

How involved are you in the day to day with John Tortorella and Danny Briere? Are you in those meetings and involved, or are they having them, and it comes to you when needed?

"It's a bit of both. There's often times where they're doing their thing and getting the team in the place it needs to be on any particular day, but the conversations are frequent. We're all around all the time. I kind of look at the way Vegas has done things with George McPhee and Kelly McCrimmon, the way they've worked together. They're almost inseparable at times. I think it's a pretty good way to do things, so Danny and I have an open line of communication every day and really enjoy hanging out together. I think that's been beneficial in a lot of ways, but most importantly it's a lot of fun."

Flyers Needed A Change

09/22/2023 at 10:12am EDT

from Chuck Bausman of Philly Hockey Now,

Philadelphia Flyers coach John Tortorella likes what he sees so far from his team — on and off the ice.

“I like the feeling of the room,” Tortorella said. “I think the room’s changed. It has changed.

“Kevin [Hayes] is gone, Tony’s [DeAngelo] gone, Provy’s [Ivan Provorov] gone. And really good people. I wish them nothing but great luck with their teams. And they landed on some good teams.”

Tortorella was impressed with how his players reported to the Flyers Training Center in Voorhees well before they were required to. He believes that helps lead to a close team and locker room.

“Our room needed to change,” Tortorella said. “When you subtract people, it allows the room to open up, it allow people to speak. Allow people to show maybe who they are.

“That’s the exciting part for me. You have [Garnet] Hathaway come in — great pro. [Marc Staal] Staalsie comes in — a great pro. Then you watch the room grow.

“That’s what’s exciting to me. We’ve had such a good feeling around here since all of them have come in.”

A New Sweater For The Philadelphia Flyers

06/20/2023 at 8:49am EDT

from the Philadelphia Flyers,

The Philadelphia Flyers unveiled today the club's new home and road uniforms featuring a collection of design elements and new features which officially usher in the team's New Era of Orange. The design changes are the first alterations to the team's primary home and away uniforms since 2010.

"This New Era of Orange is all about honoring our franchise's storied past while writing an exciting, new chapter of Flyers history," said Daniel J. Hilferty, Comcast Spectacor Chairman & CEO and Governor of the Philadelphia Flyers. "These new uniforms represent that sentiment perfectly with details to honor previous eras paired with a fresh, modern design. And there's no better company than Independence Blue Cross to be our first jersey patch partner! It is an organization that has meant so much to me personally and the entire Philadelphia region."

The club collaborated with the NHL's League-wide uniform partner, adidas, to bring the design to life. Many key stakeholders across the organization including Flyers season ticket members, Flyers alumni and broadcasters were consulted throughout the process. To honor its tradition while carving out a new era for the franchise, the Flyers are combining notable components of its past jerseys to form a modern adaptation of its storied history.
