Florida Signs Gus Forsling To An Eight-Year Deal

03/07/2024 at 12:00pm EST

via Colby Guy of Florida Hockey Now,

Florida Panthers general manager Bill Zito told reporters that the team agreed to an eight-year contract extension with star defenseman Gus Forsling.

Per Elliotte Friedman, the contract will carry an annual cap hit of $5.75 million.

The new contract will kick in during the 2024-25 season.

Forsling, 27, developed into a bonafide top-pairing defenseman since getting claimed off waivers by Florida in 2021.

He has 37 goals and 126 total points with a plus/minus of +120 in 258 games as a Panther.

Forsling made the full-time jump to Florida’s top pair at the start of the 2022-23 season when the team traded MacKenzie Weegar while shouldering No. 1 defenseman minutes while Aaron Ekblad spent time on injured reserve.

The Florida Panthers Have Not Lost A Road Game In Over Two Months

02/22/2024 at 9:09am EST

from George Richards of Florida Hockey Now,

Florida has won its past 11 road games, one away from the record set first by the Detroit Red Wings (March 1-April 15, 2006) and then tied by the Minnesota Wild (Feb. 18-April 9, 2015).

The Panthers have not lost a road game since losing 3-1 at Calgary on Dec. 18.

Since then, Florida has outscored its opponents a whopping 52-18 in those wins.

But, with the road streak interrupted by the Christmas break — Florida did not play a road game after Calgary until it beat Tampa Bay 3-2 on Dec. 27 — as well as the All-Star break, coach Paul Maurice said this current run of wins does not feel all that special.

Of course, the Panthers would much rather be on an 11-game road winning streak than the alternative.

“Feels a little bit less, honestly,” Maurice said when asked about the potential for tying the record. “we have had some pretty good runs and they have been around breaks. I got asked about where we lost our last road game — and we had just been talking about where our season had turned. We lost in Calgary, then came home and lost to St. Louis. That would be a low point. But then we took off.

“The (streak) just doesn’t feel connected. If we had played nine, 10, 11 straight road games and you went on that run, yeah, you would feel that. It doesn’t feel like. But it’s good. Better than the other.’’

The Florida Panthers Remain Hot

02/12/2024 at 10:55am EST

from Travis Yost of TSN,

But the Florida Panthers, as it stands today, may be the most dangerous team in the National Hockey League. And for Atlantic Division contenders — including their most likely first-round foe in the Toronto Maple Leafs — they are becoming a major concern.

Outside of Sam Reinhart’s mind-boggling 39 goals (and counting), coverage of the Panthers has been a little light for a team with so much returning pedigree.

Through the weekend action, Florida already has four skaters (the aforementioned Reinhart, as well as forwards Matthew Tkachuk, Carter Verhaeghe, and Alex Barkov) over the 50-point threshold, keying an impressive offence.

But it’s their defensive performance that has garnered my attention. This isn’t the same old all attack, all of the time, team. Florida is second in the league in goals conceded per game (2.5), with Sergei Bobrovsky and Anthony Stolarz both outperforming behind an improved defensive structure.

The Panthers are starting to tilt the ice in these games in stunning fashion. Florida’s goal differentials (both real and expected) have been going vertical for months, and they compare extremely favourably to their Atlantic Division counterparts:

I'd Like To Post Gudbranson/Cousins Today

via Sportsnet's YouTube page,

Watch as Columbus Blue Jackets defenceman Erik Gudbranson jumps Florida Panthers forward Nick Cousins, seeking retribution for a hit he received earlier in the period, and is handed multiple penalties including a game misconduct.

I'd post the video if I could but for over a year now YouTube has been restricting some videos with this warning when attempting to get the embed code.

This video is age-restricted and only available on YouTube.

So watch it there.

Sasha Barkov Listed Day To Day But It Could Be Longer

11/19/2023 at 1:09pm EST

from Colby Guy of Florida Hockey Now,

Florida Panthers captain Sasha Barkov is “day-to-day” with a knee injury coach Paul Maurice said following Sunday’s practice at the Arena.

Barkov will miss Monday’s game against the Edmonton Oilers.

“We’re still looking at it,” Maurice said. “We didn’t [place him on injured reserve] but we still can and that would take him into the weekend.”

Barkov left the Panthers win win over the Anaheim Ducks on Friday after taking a knee-to-knee hit from Jackson LaCombe early in the third period.

Spencer Knight On His Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

09/16/2023 at 2:25pm EDT

from Ken Campbell of The Hockey News,

As the Florida Panthers were burning their way through the playoffs last spring, Spencer Knight would say the same thing to anyone who inquired about the reason for their unlikely trip to the Stanley Cup final.

“I told people it was because they got rid of a lot of the dead weight,” Knight joked.

As the Florida Panthers approach Day 1 of training camp on Thursday, their backup goalie will be back with them for the first time since he left the team to enroll in the NHL/NHL Players’ Association player assistance program in late February. While the Panthers were rallying to make the playoffs and shocking the hockey world with their inspiring run, Knight was at his parents’ home in Darien, Conn., dealing with an ongoing case of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) that made it impossible to continue playing in the NHL.

In a one-hour interview with The Hockey News for an in-depth story for the upcoming Goalie Issue, Knight talked about what led him to seek the help of the players’ assistance program and how he has come out the other side with a renewed perspective on both his life and his career.

“I was spiralling in a direction I didn’t want to be going,” Knight said.

Knight said all of it started in 2019 when he was a freshman at Boston College. For reasons he can’t explain, he started excessively washing his hands. The trips to the washroom to run his hands under the tap increased to the point where he talked to his parents about it after that season and thought he might need some help. But it never really hampered his ability to function.

Spencer Knight Is Back On The Ice

07/12/2023 at 7:34pm EDT

from Jameson Olive of FloridaPanthers.com,

Spencer Knight is getting back to doing what he loves.

Manning the crease for the Panthers in an official capacity for the first time since he entered the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program in February, the gifted young goaltender has been enjoying "just getting back into the swing of things" at this week's development camp.

"I approach it like it's just a great opportunity to play hockey," Knight said after the third day of camp on Wednesday in Coral Springs. "Any opportunity to play hockey is a great opportunity."

When asked about getting back to normal, Knight smirked and said that actually being on the ice this early in the offseason is surprisingly the exact opposite of his usual summer routine.

"Honestly, I take a break regardless [of the situation] for a long period of time in the summer," the former first-round pick said. "I don't think I [usually] start skating until August. That's kind of the thing. I don't think it's an unusual thing for me to take a few months off from the skating aspect."

Prior to getting back on the ice with the Panthers, Knight said that he'd been doing off-ice workouts -- "not just sitting around at the beach all day," he joked -- in preparation for camp.

During his time away from the NHL, he also said that he adopted a new outlook.

The Goaltending Situation For The Florida Panthers

06/19/2023 at 2:16pm EDT

from David Dwork of The Hockey News,

Goaltending played a major role in the Florida Panthers reaching the Stanley Cup Final.

The importance lies not only in the skill, but also in the depth of the position, which for Florida was put on display by AHL veteran Alex Lyon in the final weeks of the regular season.

The 30-year-old was called into action after Sergei Bobrovsky fell ill during a road trip in Canada, and Lyon responded by going on a season-saving stretch that propelled the Panthers into the final Eastern Conference playoff spot.

Once into the postseason, Bobrovsky reclaimed his crease and played some of the best hockey of his career. He played a pivotal role in Florida going on an 11-1 stretch that saw them cut through the playoff field like butter en route to the team’s first Final appearance in 27 years....

Looking ahead to next season, the Panthers currently have Bobrovsky and Spencer Knight under contract, and at the minor league level, Mack Guzda and recently signed Swiss goalie Ludovic Waeber are locked up for the year.

With Knight, however, there is still some unknown regarding his status for the upcoming season.

Knight left the Panthers in late February to enter the NHL and NHLPA’s shared player assistance program.

He moved back home to Connecticut to participate in the program, which he has since completed.

Season Ends For The Florida Panthers And Vegas Management Team Thinks Of Others

06/14/2023 at 8:32am EDT

from George Richards of Florida Hockey Now,

The Florida Panthers went on an incredible run through the Stanley Cup Playoffs, defying the odds from the start of the postseason all the way to an Eastern Conference championship.

What the Panthers accomplished this season — and in the manner they did so — will be remembered for a long time to come.

But Tuesday night was not one of reflection for the Panthers but disappointment in the way it ended.

This was not time to talk about upsetting the Boston Bruins or taking out the Toronto Maple Leafs or even sweeping the Carolina Hurricanes.

There will be plenty of time for that.

“It’s definitely tough, right now, to look back at anything,” captain Sasha Barkov said. “It has been amazing, this group of guys gave it all out there every night, every single night. It’s hard right now, but for sure, this is something I will remember for the rest of my life. Whether it’s a practice or game, I will remember this group. Hell of a journey.”

Pressure Game For The Vegas Golden Knights?

06/13/2023 at 10:53am EDT

from George Richards of Florida Hockey Now,

Throughout this postseason, the Florida Panthers appeared to be playing with house money. They will try and get back to their winning ways tonight against the host Vegas Golden Knights in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final.

Florida is most certainly the heavy underdog coming into this game what with Vegas now just a win away from winning it all.

The Stanley Cup will be inside T-Mobile Arena tonight and it will be all shined up and ready to hand over to the Golden Knights if they are able to finish off the Panthers.

The stakes for Vegas — the 6-year-old hockey team, not the city — has never been higher.

The Panthers are not just happy to be here, but they are hungry to come home for another game. They want to keep this roller coaster ride of a season going.

Vegas can see the finish line but many times, that final hill before you reach the tape is the hardest to overcome.

The marathon of a season has now come down to a sprint.

The Panthers are beat up but do not appear to be beaten down.

They say they’re ready for the fight that is coming. Florida is going to have to empty whatever is left in its tank tonight.

The Florida Panthers Looking For A Win

06/12/2023 at 10:06am EDT

from George Richards of Florida Hockey Now,

The Florida Panthers were back on a westbound flight to Las Vegas on Sunday afternoon with a little less pep in their step than the last time they made this journey.

On that previous sojourn to Fabulous Las Vegas, the Panthers had all the promise of what could be the greatest moment of their collective careers.

Now, down 3-1 in this Stanley Cup Final to the Golden Knights, the Panthers are in survival mode.

The next loss Florida suffers will mark the end of what has turned out to be a pretty cool 2022-23 campaign.

While hoisting that Cup may have been on their minds when the Panthers last flew west to start the series, it cannot be on their minds now.

One win will not get the Panthers that Cup — but it will keep them in the fight.
