NHL Teams In NYC Area On A Record Pace

12/02/2022 at 9:02am EST

from Greg Wyshynski of ESPN,

Through Tuesday night, the Devils, Islanders and Rangers had a combined .657 points percentage, or the number of points in the standings divided by the total possible points. If that holds, it would be the most successful season for the three rivals combined since the Devils relocated from Colorado in 1982. According to ESPN Stats & Information, the previous high for combined points percentage is .599 in the 1993-94 season.

As Stan Fischler told me recently: "I don't recall a trifecta quite as special as this."

That assessment carries the weight of history. Fischler attended his first Rangers game in 1939. As a journalist, he covered each of these franchises during their Stanley Cup championship runs. He's seen a lot of New York hockey. He's never seen it look like this.

"Right now, we have the rare opportunity -- slumps notwithstanding -- for each of the Met clubs having a shot at making the playoffs," he said. "This is rare, exciting stuff for the fans overall, and me in particular. It feels like a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I'm sopping it up every night."

Video- Down 3-0, The New York Islanders With 5 Unanswered Goals

10/29/2022 at 11:22pm EDT

from Adrian Dater of Colorado Hockey Now,

The Colorado Avalanche are going over to Finland all of next week to be good ambassadors for the game of hockey and, ostensibly, to enjoy themselves as reigning Stanley Cup champions. But there might just be a bag skate or two in the players’ near-term future after a total collapse against the New York Islanders in a game that seemed well in the bag before that.

Blowing a three-goal lead built through the first half of the hockey game, the Avalanche left the UBS Center as losers tonight. The final from Money-Makin’ Strong Island: Islanders 5, Colorado Avalanche 4.

Instead of a perfectly respectable 5-3-1 record heading to Finland, the Avalanche are the definition of mediocrity so far, at 4-4-1. It was already going to be a long plane ride to Helsinki tomorrow night. After this meltdown, the flight just got longer.

Quite The Honor For Stan Fischler

10/24/2022 at 5:44pm EDT

from Cory Wright of the Islanders website,

The banners hanging in the rafters at UBS Arena represent the ultimate accolade the New York Islanders can give one of its legendary players. Each one of them tells a story about a player who left an indelible mark on the franchise.

But what about the storytellers? How can a team honor the media figures who bridge the connection between player and fan? There is perhaps no bigger honor a team can bestow on a media member than naming its press box after them and on Wednesday, the press level at UBS Arena will officially be named after Stan Fischler.

"To have my name on the press box is roughly equivalent to something like having a little banner for me," Fischler said. "In my personal journalistic life, this is the crown jewel."

Fischler has been a fixture around the Islanders for 50 years. He covered the team as a writer during the first game in franchise history in 1972 and was a part of the Islanders first telecast in 1974-75. For years, he was beamed into living rooms on SportsChannel and MSG Networks, bringing his unique interview style, hockey acumen and love of the Islanders into fans' homes.

Look At The Bright Side Of The New York Islanders

10/08/2022 at 9:17am EDT

from Stan Fischler at The Hocky News,

Competent broadcasters such as Mike Rupp and Devan Dubnyk – along with GM Lou Lamoriello – are embracing Alfred E. Neuman’s “What, Me Worry?” view. That is, simply that 2022 was an aberration. That‘s in contrast to others, such as the Hockey News, which suffer doubts about rookie coach Lane Lambert's crew. So who’s correct? Neither, I say.
While the Elmonters' offense ranked 21st, 23rd and 24th in recent years, it didn't hurt during their successive playoff runs.
Nor do I buy the bromide that Barry Trotz suffocated Mat Barzal – No. 13 generated oodles of high-quality chances, yet his shooting was as unlucky as his uniform number. All of which raises the question of how elite the flashy center truly is.
Ownership certainly thinks the highest of Mat as his new, long-term contract proves. While Magic Mat is here to stay, Lambert's puzzle centers around finding the most productive wings for Mat and, brother/sister that is a challenge.
Here's the upside to soothe the Blue and Orange Army. A Vezina-caliber goalie, Ilya Sorokin, is entering his prime. The addition of rock-solid 'Big Al' Romanov to an already stout blueline featuring blossoming Noah Dobson is large, plus. And although it pains me to say it, jettisoning the revered 'Big Z' Chara and Andy Greene is addition by subtraction. Youthful replacements Robin Salo and Sebastian Aho will boost the squad’s energy.
