Who's Available At #15 In The Draft

05/09/2024 at 7:48am EDT

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman likely will take the highest player on the team’s draft board with the 15th pick, whether he’s a center, winger or defenseman.

Ideally, he’ll be a winger who can put the puck in the net. That’s the biggest organizational need.

The Red Wings used their past two first-round picks on two-way centers, Marco Kasper is 2022 and Nate Danielson in 2023. They have a decent stable of young defensemen: Moritz Seider is well-established, Simon Edvinsson and Albert Johansson will be on the roster at the start of next season and Axel Sandin-Pellikka might not be far behind. Sebastian Cossa and Trey Augustine are their goaltenders of the future.

They need goal-scorers.

The draft is top-heavy with defensemen. As many as six might be selected in the top 10. That could leave more scoring options for the Red Wings in the middle of the first round. Here is a look at some who might be available at No. 15 during the first day of the draft June 28 at the Sphere in Las Vegas:

Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, 6-1, 198, RW, Mora (Allsvenskan, Sweden): The top Norwegian prospect of all-time, his game has been progressing nicely in the Swedish leagues. The Sporting News says, “The right winger is incredibly well-rounded with few holes in his game. He does a lot of things well, including scoring from range and handling the puck.”

I imagine that Yzerman would want to insure his center position one more time and get a big highly skilled centerman, that would be my pick.

Here's who a number of individuals and rating services list as the Wings' potential pick at #15. Each player is linked to the their info page on mynhldraft.com. I like how they provide evaluations from a number of different people as well as detailed stats info.

 Adam Jiricek | RHD | 6'2" 175lbs (FLO Hockey)

 Carter Yakemchuk | RHD | 6'3" 190lbs (FC Hockey & Recruit Scouting)

 Emil Hemming | RW | 6'2" 200lbs (Bob McKenzie)

 Henry Mews | RHD | 6'0" 185lbs (Sportsnet - Cosentino)

 Liam Greentree | RW | 6'2" 210lbs (tankathon.com)

 Michael BrandseggNygard | RW | 6'1" 195lb (eliteprospects.com & mynhldraft.com & SMAHT Scouting)

 Sacha Boisvert | C/LW | 6'2" 180lbs (Sportsnet - Bukula)

Terik Parascak | RW | 5'11" 175lbs (NHL Central Scouting)

 Trevor Connelly | C/LW | 6'1" 161lbs (Daily Faceoff & Dobber Prospects & Draft Prospects Hockey)

  Zeev Buium | LD | 6'0" 185lbs | Shai Buium's brother (McKeen's Hockey)

Michael BrandseggNygard and Trevor Connelly were both listed by three of the ratings services at #15. Five list defensemen at #15, six list right wings, and four list center/left wings.

This year I'm not even going to try to guess what the inscrutable Mr. Yzerman will do.

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
