The Downward Spiral Continues For The Wings

03/29/2024 at 1:47am EDT

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

"They're a good team and they capitalized on their chances," defenseman Ben Chiarot said. "They're a team that's contending for a Stanley Cup right now. They know how to play and have been playing that way for a long time. A lot of dangerous players over there, and if you give them a couple of chances to put it in, they'll do it.

"We didn't capitalize on ours."

The Wings (36-30-7) received bad news before the game that forwards Patrick Kane and Austin Czarnik were unavailable because of illness. They went with 11 forwards and seven defensemen instead, bringing in forward Daniel Sprong and defenseman Justin Holl....

"We knew we'd be up against it, only from where the lineup was but to have it happen right before the game," coach Derek Lalonde said. "It's a bit of stinger. That's a tough team to play 11 forwards with because of the pace they play at. We probably could have done more to give ourselves a chance but you look back at this game and there was opportunity in this game."

Lalonde felt the second-period implosion may have began in the first period.

"I'm glad we got out of the first (0-0, though being outshot 15-3)," Lalonde said. "I know the shot volume is extremely lopsided but that's them. If you look at the underlying numbers in the first it wasn't that bad. We'd like to steal the period but we didn't and then a little breakdown on the track in the second, and they score on the power play, and it got away from us."

You were out shot 15-3. I am so over Lalonde's Pollyanna, silver lining stat bullshit.  He is a soft coach with a mostly soft team.

I understand they were short two forwards but playing a team like Carolina you do not use 1-2-2 scheme. You need to bother them in their zone, at their blue line and clog up the neutral zone. If not they run like a wildfire during a drought.

The next three weeks are all about expectation management for me.  I dont expect a win against Tampa or Florida.   If they make it, its going to be over the course of the last six games on the Wings end, and dumb luck from the Washington/Philly side of things.

If they do make the playoffs, I expect them to lose in five.  They will just be happy they made it.  Seider and others will get some playoff experience.   Thats the best possible outcome.

Let's not forget about the Islanders, they are in the mix as well

In what universe does this even exist? Maybe next game will be another, must play well kind of game, instead of a must win. Every game from day 1 of the season is a must win game for crying out loud. And jettison the vets that were supposed to display leadership. That has not happened on any level.

How does a team go from being somewhat competitive, the talk of the league, to complete shit?  Losing to the very worst teams in the league? I dont give a crap how good Carolina is. The Wings gave up before they even hit the ice, they never even tried, and the coaches never seem to be held accountable. Shame on them all.

Well Kate, as many have posted they seem to have quit.  I( mean being outscored by  Arizona 8-1? Add losing at home to the Ducks and Sharks. Those games shaped the season.😡

Despite being outshot 15:3 I do not remember Carolina having a single scoring chance in the first period except for a semi dangerous shot by Gentzel from a sharp angle. There were no odd men rushes against either, so I disagree we did not compete, I actually thought the compete level was very good in the first period. And the second period was a period of Petry, he was single handedly responsible for all 4 goals against.

Tell us how you really feel. :)
In all honesty, when you start to lose fans like Kate, you better shake things up. I feel the same way.
