Quick Recap- Wings/Coyoted

03/08/2024 at 11:30pm EST

It's been a long day for me and it looks like it could be an even longer night.

Arizona up 3-0 after the first period. Detroit's speed has been nonexistent and the Wings chased the Coyotes all period long.

Detroit dominated the second period but it was Arizona with the only goal, 4-0 after forty minutes.

No scoring in the third, Arizona wins 4-0.

Team Stats

Below, a BSD interview with Yzerman (Berggren will be recalled and play in Vegas tomorrow).

Paul

I'll catch up with the post game media, etc in the morning.  Right now I need some sleep.

Welcome to the 2024 long night of the soul.  I need morphine after that.   There are plenty of games left, yes, but these few games make it look like Larkin is the only person with heart on this team.  Thats very concerning.  Im sure the rest of the league is taking notes too.  Might as well get Dylan fitted for a bubble suit now.

Paul

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

"I thought the guys were ready," coach Derek Lalonde said. "Felt like a home game in warmups. But, just, the inability to compete early on, the lost battles. Much better in the second. If we could have started our game like we did the second, it could have been a much different outcome."

The losing comes as the New York Islanders have moved within two points of the Eastern Conference wild-card berths, where the Wings (33-24-6) cling to a position after losses to the Colorado Avalanche, Florida Panthers and Islanders. Detroit is tied with the Tampa Bay Lightning, albeit with one fewer game played. During their skid, the Wings have been outscored, 20-5.

"I don't think there's any shame in losing to Florida and Colorado," Andrew Copp said. "We are trying to right the ship here, play with a certain edge, certain tenacity and we didn't do that off the hop. We got better as the game went along, didn't give them much. But we have to be ready right from the get-go. We need points right now."

Copp said the fact Yzerman didn't make any additions was "talked about before the game.

"It should be a vote of confidence. We have to figure out a way to right the ship here."...

"The first 10 minutes, we weren't playing on our toes, and they get a couple early," Copp said. "It's tough to fight back in this league when you're down two- or three-nothing. That's kind of the difference in the game."

Paul

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

What's concerning Lalonde during this four-game losing streak?

"No energy, no pop," Lalonde said. "It goes into a little bit of lack of details. Some easy goals against. I'm hoping a little bit of the effort we showed in the second (period) and flashes in the third can be a standard that we can use going forward."...

"We have to try to focus on the two or less (goals allowed) that we've talked about for a number of months now," forward Andrew Copp said. "Focus on the team defense, penalty kill needs to get better.

"That was my fault today on the seem (Coyotes power-play goal from Logan Cooley), can't have that and especially down 2-0. But it's just a commitment to good team defense, and especially with 71 (Larkin) we're not as high octane offensively.

"We have plenty of capable players who can put the puck in the net, but we have to commit to the defense."...

The Wings have recalled forward Jonatan Berggren from Grand Rapids. Berggren will be in the lineup Saturday in Vegas after earning 46 points (19 goals, 27 assists) in 43 games with the Griffins. Berggren has two goals and three assists in nine games with the Wings this season.

"Hopefully he can provide a little spark," Lalonde said. "We'll have 12 forwards again. Hopefully we can bottle up some of our compete to start the second (period) going forward."

The team needs to be better. Light a fire under them coach Lalonde. Each player including Raymond and Seider need to get things going. No urgency and not a care not good at all.

nolan33

Its hard to wrap my head around how much money I spent to watch that game. Especially considering its likely the last game Ill see in AZ. Absolutely the worst game Ive ever seen. It felt like the wings didnt even come close to scoring. No desperation. Disappointing.

Steeb

Blanked by AZ (after they didn't win a single game in FEB), after AZ traded two of their best players, and we're in a playoff race.

Get rid of the garbage patch, guys.

It's probably a typo, but the headline is accurate, since we got "Coyoted".

PaulSteeb

A tired typo Steeb, but like you said it is accurate and I will leave it.

bezukovPaul

I was wondering myself Paul, but I have to agree that Coyoted is perfect.

rwbill

If I learned anything from Jeff Blashill, it is that the most important thing is process.

And this process on the ice right now is awful.

bigfrog

Disorganized, sloppy, and didn't seem to care sums it up. Loss number 5 in a row is coming up on Saturday.  🙁
