Points Needed Now

03/11/2024 at 4:34am EDT

from Bob Duff of Detroit Hockey Now,

A little over a week ago, they were eight points clear of any team in the chase for an Eastern Conference wild card playoff spot. Today, thanks to the New York Islanders beating the Anaheim Ducks 6-1 on Sunday, they are now deadlocked, each with 72 points. And the Isles are holding a game in hand.

The Islanders have won six in a row. Heading to Buffalo for a Tuesday showdown with the Sabres that will complete a four-game road trip, the Red Wings are losers of five in succession. They fell 5-3 on Saturday to the Vegas Golden Knights.

The Wings need wins. And they need them right now.

“We’re not in the taking the positives mood,” Copp said. “We need points.

This week is launching a five-game run for Detroit against clubs that are currently not part of the playoff picture. After Buffalo, the Red Wings come home to face the Arizona Coyotes and then a rematch with the Sabres. Next, they go to Pittsburgh, before returning for a home date against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

season comes down to this next stretch, no doubt about it. they nut up or shut up. have said all season management made the kind of mistakes that will lead them right up to but not into the playoffs, which is the worst you can do. i want to be wrong.

Paul, so frustrating how fast this site forgets users are logged in. makes it hard to want to add more thoughts when you hit Post Comment and your posts are immediately lost.

copp, petry, chiarot, gost, this all looked so desperate. just proves you cant sign randos nilly willy and hope. back to the drawing board? does anyone think if they make the playoffs they dont get nuked in the first round anyway?

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

"I think the first couple games, I think we were kind of sorry for ourselves, maybe," Seider said after Saturday's 5-3 defeat to the Golden Knights. "I think there was a lot of good stuff today, everyone stepped up his game a little more. I think its even harder for him watching the games up top. But overall we have a really good lineup, even though hes not in it, and we just have to find a way to get two points."

They may feel sorry for themselves all summer if they wind up missing the playoffs by a point or two. The Golden Knights, while enduring some turbulence themselves, are the defending Stanley Cup champions and freshly strengthened by big additions ahead of last week's trade deadline. The Wings held their own against them, playing on the second night of a back-to-back, and it rightfully stung that a game that was 3-3 with three minutes to play ended with the Wings not even squeezing out one point.

But there was no shame there, just as there wasn't in losing at home to the Florida Panthers, who entered Sunday atop the NHL standings, nor at the Colorado Avalanche, who have the league's best home record. It's Friday's dud in the desert, where a lackadaisical effort resulted in a 4-0 loss to the lottery-headed Arizona Coyotes that was embarrassing.

Especially since the Blackhawks dropped 7 on the Coyotes who shut out Detroit.

Steebrwbill

...immediately after (AZ) traded away two of their best players.

VPalmerSteeb

They were not their best players and we are 1-7 against Arizona in the last 8 I believe. That does not take away from the fact it was an absolutely embarrassing game for us.

What RW said..... need to embrace a higher level of consistency.

With this exploded view I realized that even the Capitals can overtake the Wings pace if they win their next two.  Barf.

Also, if the NYI lose tonight the Wings will move back into the WC2 because the tiebreaker is Regulation Wins which the Wings have more.  Pretty meaningless at this point b/c theres 36 points up for winning.

I still think it will be between us and the Flyers and possibly the Devils for the final spot.
Tampa and NYI will be there.

If you are embracing The Suck, Detroit now has a 1% chance of getting the #6 pick, and 99% of sticking with the #16 pick outside the playoffs.
