Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
Great news as I feared the worst, looked very similar to Bertuzzi injuries last season
Good insurance in case they can't reach a deal with Fischer this summer.
Bob Duff of Detroit Hockey Now on Detroit's need for a #2 center,
Lalonde sought to utilize Joe Veleno as Larkins replacement between Patrick Kane and Alex DeBrincat on the clubs top line. The results speak volumes about this not being the answer. In three games, Veleno is pointless and -3. The Red Wings coach gave up the experiment on Saturday, moving Compher into the top-line slot.
He needs to be more assertive with the puck, Lalonde said of Veleno.
The more you see of Veleno, the less appealing he becomes, although admittedly, it didnt start out that way. Hes played 15+ minutes of ice time in 29 games this season. Over the first 12 games, his production showed four goals, three assists and a +3 rating. In 17 games since, Veleno has one goal, three assists and is -14.
When hes been asked to step up in Larkins absence this season, the data adds up even more abysmally. In those nine games, Veleno is 1-2-3 and -9.
According to NHL scouts whove seen a lot of Marco Kasper this season with AHL the Grand Rapids Griffins, hes going to be more of the same. His 200-foot game is outstanding. Kasper plays with an edge to his game.
Will Detroits top pick in the 2022 NHL entry draft produce consistently at the NHL level? Most hockey people doubt it.

SY, Datsyuk and Federov are the only premier 1C's that I remember as Wings...... It's been a long dry spell.

Seems like someone has been pointing that out all season long. Hmmmm. I wonder who that was? ;-)

That doesn't make any sense at all. Veleno's 200-foot game is not "outstanding." And he does not play with an "edge." Veleno's game has no "edge" to it at all. It's all "round corners," especially when it comes to hitting.
I think the off season is time to end the Joe Veleno experiment.
I wonder if putting Joe on the top line came down from on high. Give Joe some time at that level and see how he fares. Big chance to make a few extra dollars in arbitration this summer. But it has not gone well, no. He's looked good as a 4C, but not much higher than that.
Is anyone really suprised Veleno hasn't excelled on the top line. That's simply too far above his pay grade. Right now he's, at best, a 3rd line center and this summer, if he is going to stick around, needs to be paid like a 4th liner with a tiny bit of upside.
Compher should have been the move from the start but it is possible they wanted to see how Veleno would handle increased responsibility. Some players thrive under that extra pressure.
