A2Y- Videos - A Disappointing Road Trip In Ottawa

02/28/2023 at 11:56pm EST

Coach Lalonde talks special teams after a loss to Ottawa. Below find Mickey Redmond, Larkin, Perron and Lalonde i one video and the game highlights.

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

These were costly losses.

"We're pretty down," captain Dylan Larkin said. "This one, both of these (games), it's just not the way we wanted this trip to go. We're definitely leaving with our tails between our legs. It's a tough feeling."...

"Our poor execution on special teams," Lalonde said. "We were ready to play, we had some bite to our game early, and then just the inability to execute, especially on the special teams. We've taken a lot of pride all year on not allowing easy offense and the breakaways, the odd-man rushes, poor (goaltender) Ville (Husso), that's an impossible game for a goalie. He never got comfortable.

"We never gave him a chance and it just got away from us."...

"Some of it is self-inflicted," forward David Perron said. "We went to the box too much, I was guilty of that myself, and sometimes unlucky plays, but you have to find a way to stay out of it."...

"Credit to them (Ottawa), obviously they played two real good games," Lalonde said. "They executed well, which we did not. This is unchartered territory for us in that we had been playing so well of late. We just have to ask the guys to bounce back on Thursday (at home, against Seattle)."

The Wings may have also suffered some bad news on the injury front.

Hronek only played eight minutes, and none after the middle of the second period, the Wings announcing after the second period Hronek was out for the remainder of the evening with an upper-body injury.

"We'll evaluate but he had to leave the game, it's something he went into the game (with), so we'll evaluate and have a better feeling (Wednesday or Thursday)," Lalonde said.

oh great, so now we can't even trade him.

I thought that the perron, sudquist, chariot, and rasmussen were supposed to be the toughness the wings needed, but i guess not.  I haven't been very impressed with Ras for a lot of his time with the wings but this showing in ottawa has me rethinking his worth.

should the wings have considered tanner jeannot even though the price seems high?

Three straight losses, with the last two being ugly, since waking up last Friday in a wild card spot and Yzerman's decision has been all but made. Disappointing to see them fall flat on their face in Ottowa but maybe that's what needed to happen to cut through the bullshit and get a clear view of where this team stands. Time to sell everything not nailed down and load up for the draft.

Man are we soft. Those 2 games were unbelievably disappointing.

It's time to sell.  The winning road trip was nice and felt great, but it was against teams that didn't matter so much.  We need to win against the Eastern teams on the bubble, which we can't do.  If the Wings get 4 points against Ottawa the last couple days, it's a different story, but they didn't.

Not only did the Wings not get any points, they showed that they can't play rough and tumble hockey - the definition of playoff hockey.

Glass half full maybe?  Hopefully we look back on this and it is the best thing that could have happened.  The next two days will tell.  To me it reinforces that there is more work to be done.  Move out Bert if we arent close to singing him, although at this point, I am not sold on signing him at all, his injury history has me concerned that he would even be around when this team is truly playoff competitive.  I say move whatever you can if you are going to lose them for nothing, we seem to have a log jam at forward, and still need more scoring.  This could be an opportunity to move some out, and possible buy at the same time.  Other than Kane, which he controlled, the prices seem to be high for the buyers.  I am not sure who is left at this point that still has capital to move and would be a buyer at this point.  Maybe MN? I believe that Bert is not a long term part of this teams success, so best to part while the price is high.  We still need a few high end pieces before a cup run.

Even with one or two wins it was not likely that SY was going to do add much by the deadline.  Hes clearly got an idea on the D, Maatta and Walman seen as reliable contributors.  Chiarot has three more years at $4.75M each.

Im guessing hell sell off what he can, whether its someone perceived as valuable right now well just have to see.  Just how valuable do other teams see any of the Detroit players, just a few probably.

Interesting, Nick Jensen just signed three more years with Washington at slightly more than Walman.  Good for him.
