A2Y- Quick Recap - Detroit/Ottawa

02/28/2023 at 9:47pm EST

Passing to Mr. Kulfan for the first period recap.

The Senators added another goal in the second to make it 5-1 after 40 minutes.

For good measure, the Sens scored in the 3rd too, winning the game 6-1.

Team Stats

Detroit goal is below.

Not much to say about the last two games, but as they say, "Water always finds it's level eventually".

These two games show the wings have no business in the playoffs. They should sell what they can, but it may be too late.

For the first time all season I was pumped for puck drop, man did that suck some biscuits.

Let's state some obvious...

  • Ottawa brought playoff intensity big boy hockey, and the Wings, outside of Seider didn't pack their big boy pants.
  • I shouldn't short Walman there either, his cutting ability on his skates and tight puck handling is impressing me more each game.
  • The wings got screwed on Kubalik penalty and the penalty shot, and they used it as an excuse to fold up shop.
  • As much as I like Peron Sundquist, especially because they have a bit of size to them, at least Sonny, they're old and slow, need to be playing complimentary, not prime roles.
  • Is Bertuzzi helping his trade value, or a UFA contract in the summer? I'm not sure a GM looking for a top 6 player covets a guy who isn't catching and handling passes in the slot.
  • Vrana, Suter, Zadina, Raymond, could've all worn the same number, smaller, not fast, not effective.
  • Kubalik has been noticeably more physical lately, loaded bench has given him a positive nudge.
  • Hronek with an apple on the eventual game winner, skate it in, dump it in, do anything but sauce up a breakaway. Unfortunately the team looked better defensively after he departed. I'm sure other GMs noticed that as well.
  • Chariot is a marginal top 4 Dman.
  • Where's the $9mil Larkin been? He was on a tear, but his since come back down to earth, would like to see him pick it back up.

I let my expectations get heightened, and that's my fault. Waiting until the market has dried up before trading players away, well that could be Stevie's fault, now we wait...

Chet

Agree with most of this. For sure, Chariot is not a top 4 d-man. His deal was a huge mistake.

Many trades already been made by the top teams. Looks like Steve will have no choice but to wait until summer to really re-tool. Hopefully, for better size, grit and scoring. And whatever he does, find a way to dump Hronek.
