Wings Want Filip Zadina To Go To The Net

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

There was a sequence during Sunday’s Red-White game when Frans Nielsen drove to the net and slipped a pass to Filip Zadina, who tried to stuff the puck around the goal post.

That’s where the Detroit Red Wings want Zadina to be: in a rectangular area around the net, roughly from hashmark to hashmark and hashmark to goal line, where the Wings say an estimated 40% of NHL goals are scored.

It’s the same message the Wings stressed to Anthony Mantha a couple years ago: find ways to be around the net and the goals will start piling up....

“Probably it’s going to be my game — go more to the net and I’ll be more productive,” Zadina said Sunday. “There are some places around the net where you can score more goals than the other, so if I will be there more, I will probably get more goals.”...

“The secret is learning how to earn your own confidence through the work you put in, and being mentally tough enough when your place slips a little bit that you know it’s going to come back,” Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. “But that comes back to putting the work in and having that true self confidence where you know you have the skill set to succeed and you know you’ve put the work in to succeed.”

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Michael Rasmussen’s future is at center, and the Detroit Red Wings currently don’t have a roster spot available at that position.

That could prompt the Red Wings to send their top 2017 draft pick to the Grand Rapids Griffins to start the season.

“He’s going to have a chance over a number of exhibition games to have big impact on the games, so ultimately, he’s going to have to have a good impact on the game,” Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said….
“If you looked at Ras’ long-term outlook, he’s a (6-6) center—those guys can be really, really hard to play against because they’re so good defensively, so if he’s a guy who can really shut down other teams’ best players, that’s a real positive,” Blashill said. “I think his ability to score net-front is a real positive. He’s got to score, but ultimately, he’s going to have to beat out (Dylan) Larkin, Fil (Valtteri Filppula), (Frans) Nielsen, Glenny (Luke Glendening), Ehner (Christoffer Ehn), (Jacob) de la Rose.

“Just got to beat guys out. That’s the NHL. You got to grab spots. I’d like to see him—Steve (general manager Yzerman) would like to see him—long-term at center, so those are the spots. You got to win one of those spots.”

It’s the same message the Wings stressed to Anthony Mantha a couple years ago

And that message caused him to struggle mightily until last season when they let him go back to being a shooter.

Turn one of your half dozen grinders into a net front guy, let the skill guys use the skills that got them here.

The message caused Mantha to struggle or his effort, his injuries, and him being a young player on a bad team?

And how does go to the net equate to net front presence? Watch a highlight real of Crosby’ goals (if you can stomach it), he scores most of his goals in that band box.

Reading comprehension!

Which of those quotes doesn’t equate to net front presence?

Anything beats trying to rip it from the right dot.  When it works it’s gorgeous, but not many players can pull it off consistently like Ovechkin.

Greg Johnson died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Sad is the only word that comes to my mind.

Net front presence is back to the goalie when the puck is above the face of dots, and that’s not what they’re asking him to do.  That IS what they had Mantha doing on the power play for a while. Again, wait until much time passes after you’ve had your last meal, and watch Crosby goals, he scores a lot from there and he’s not a net from presence guy.

To add most of your top scorer’s in a the league score from the same spot as well. Of course you have your snipers and what not. Yet look at the majority of the leagues top scorers and they are always around the net and in that little rectangle or crashing the net.

Everyone on a line can’t go to the net, I think.  So who is left to shoot?  Wingers, Centers or DMen.

I would think someone like Helm has to go to the Net as his shot is poor.  I thought Zadina had one of the better shots or is this a temporary demand to make him a 200’ player.  I ike Veleno a lot but I don’t think he goes to the net.

Oh well I am sure the players are not as confused as me but it is Blashill.

Very sad indeed. It’s mystifying the net effect of concussions eventually damaging the mind.  sick
