Fixing The Front Office

from Craig Custance of The Athletic,

“Could we use another person that’s got that experience to join us?” Holland said. “Certainly that’s something I’m considering and thinking about.”

Holland didn’t specify in which area, outside of experience, he’s looking. And it’s a bit of a tricky situation. It’s fairly easy to take your former players and move them into the front office. It’s a bit of a gray area as to whether the Red Wings can try to poach talent from other organizations through a promotion in title....

“You have to bring in somebody you like and trust,” said the Western Conference executive. “You have to be a little bit careful there. Most guys won’t do it, but if you have a guy who has any inkling they can take the job, you can get in trouble in a hurry.”

It’s difficult when you’ve already got as many “yes men” as he already has around him.

Maybe Todd Bertuzzi is available, he can be their “grit” consultant.

Just as they lost elite talent on the ice and did nothing to replace it the same thing happened in the front office.  And no surprise, they’re years behind in finally addressing it (or at least talking about it).

Anyone else find it a little disturbing that Blashill chose yelling and then criticizing before sitting down with Mantha and showing him what was expected. I thought that was the whole point of a modern NHL chock full of video clips and hi-tech teaching tools. If Blashill isn’t utilizing those tools with each and every player he’s doing a disservice.

Thankfully Mantha eventually asked Blashill to show him the tape. Otherwise who knows how long it would have taken.

BTW, show AA his tapes too.

To be fair, Mantha said something more like, show me what I am doing wrong. Blashill had the idea of showing him game film. Having a conflict moment is a very common type of resolution to relationships. It’s what a person does with that conflict that shows character. Mantha and Blashill showed character in this situation. So, I still don’t get all the blaming here.
