Lindy Ruff Has Adapted To The Changing Game

11/27/2022 at 2:04pm EST

from Mike G. Morreale of the NHL website,

Lindy Ruff has found a way to adapt, listen and persevere in his 22 seasons as an NHL coach.

The 62-year-old still enjoys the traditional practice, the video work, game planning, and, most importantly, watching his players excel in big moments.

On Saturday he became the fifth coach in NHL history to reach 800 wins when his New Jersey Devils defeated the Washington Capitals 5-1 at Prudential Center. The others to reach the milestone are Scotty Bowman (1,244; 1967-2002), Joel Quenneville (969; 1996-2022), Barry Trotz (914; 1998-2022) and Ken Hitchcock (849; 1995-2019).

"I've got a lot of respect for all those names ... a lot of great coaches," Ruff said. "I obviously played for Scotty Bowman and I have a lot of respect for him. I still communicate with him on occasion. The reason you get there is you've found a way to adapt through the years and get to that point."

Winning Streak Hits Ten For The New Jersey Devils

11/16/2022 at 12:32am EST

from Sean Farrell at NHLcom,

Jack Hughes scored twice and had an assist, and the New Jersey Devils extended their winning streak to 10 games with a 5-1 victory against the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre on Tuesday.

Dougie Hamilton and Jesper Bratt each had a goal and an assist, and Dawson Mercer had two assists for New Jersey (13-3-0), which hasn't lost since Oct. 24.

Vitek Vanecek made 25 saves. The goalie did not dress Saturday after being replaced in the third period of a 4-3 overtime win against the Ottawa Senators on Thursday.

"We were loose in the first period, trading chances, and weren't really committed to getting above the puck and preventing opportunities," Devils coach Lindy Ruff said. "And I've got to give [the Canadiens] some credit. They skated well, they hit a few holes on us. I thought the first period both goalies really made big saves."

The winning streak is the third longest in Devils history, trailing 13 games in 2000-01 and 11 in 2005-06.

"We knew they wanted to attack from our mistakes," New Jersey defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler said. "We just tried to limit our mistakes and have good gaps against them and give them nothing, be close to them, don't even give them a shot, and I think we were pretty good tonight."

Another Win For The New Jersey Devils

11/09/2022 at 9:03am EST

from Mikc G. Moreale of the NHL website,

Vitek Vanecek made 33 saves, and the New Jersey Devils held on to extend their winning streak to seven games with a 3-2 victory against the Calgary Flames at Prudential Center on Tuesday.

"When we needed him, he made that big save," Devils coach Lindy Ruff said.

Nico Hischier and Dougie Hamilton each had a goal and an assist, and Tomas Tatar had two assists for New Jersey (10-3-0), which hadn't won seven straight since Feb. 6-19, 2011.

"We just want to keep it rolling," said Hischier, the Devils captain. "Obviously we got a lot of confidence right now, but like I said at the beginning of the year, we can't get too low if we lose a couple and can't get too high if we win a couple. We have to try and stay on the same line, come in and work on the mistakes and try to become a better team."

A Look At The New Jersey Devils

11/08/2022 at 11:45am EST

from Adam Vingan at Sportsnet,

The pitchforks were out in New Jersey.

Devils fans came to the team’s home opener on Oct. 15 eager to voice their displeasure with the on-ice product. They booed coach Lindy Ruff during pre-game introductions, then chanted “Fire Lindy” as the Devils fell to 0-2-0 to start the season.

What a difference a few weeks make.

The Devils are 9-1-0 since then, having won six consecutive games for the first time in more than 10 years and leading the Metropolitan Division. It had been even longer — December 1996 — since the Devils swept the Canucks, Oilers and Flames on the same road trip before doing so last week.

It begs the question: Are the Devils for real this time? They’ve seemingly been on the verge of breaking out for years, but haven’t made the playoffs since 2018. Based on their underlying metrics so far this season, though, the Devils could finally be reaching their potential.
