From TSN:
It looks as though Canucks’ defenceman Mattias Ohlund will be testing the market this summer.
According to TEAM 1040 Radio in Vancouver, talks between the unrestricted free agent and the Canucks have broken off.
“I feel an excitement I haven’t felt in a long time and sometimes the unknown is pretty appealing to you,” Ohlund told TEAM 1040 radio in Vancouver. “I’ve been here for a long time and it’s been a great 11 years and if it’s meant to be, it’s going to continue. Otherwise I’m more than happy to move on.
“I want to be here if it’s a good fit for myself and my family and the Canucks. If not, it’s time to go,” said Ohlund, who has spent his entire NHL career with Vancouver. “It’s not hard at all - it’s actually pretty exciting not knowing what’s going to happen here in the future.”
Geez, if they’ve really broken off talks for good, this seems likely to make the rest of the season a bit awkward… though I imagine it’s not over by a long shot yet. Ohlund’s comments ring of “negotiation tactic” to my ears.
Anyway, GM Mike Gillis also gave an interview today, speaking to Sportsnet about his priorities at the trade deadline. A few interesting comments, but no mention of the Ohlund situation.
