Late Penalty Costly For The Wings

04/05/2024 at 11:43pm EDT

from Kevin Allen of Detroit Hockey Now,

With the game tied 3-3 midway through the third period, Perron was called for high sticking at 9:29 and Chris Kreider turned that into a game-winning power play goal.

“That was a tough penalty,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. “The momentum felt good and we put their power play on for the third time and they cashed in.”

That wasn’t the only reason the Red Wings lost. Other veterans made mistakes that were just as costly, but Perron’s penalty will be remembered because it led to a goal.

“It’s magnified now on every play,” Lalonde said. “This is why it’s really good for our guys to be going through this. It’s just different this time of year. It’s amplified this time of year and you learn, especially against a really good team, we left some plays out there. Unfortunately, it cost us.”

This lost cost the Red Wings in a big way because other teams helped them out Friday. The Buffalo Sabres knocked off Philadelphia Flyers, 4-2 and the Carolina Hurricanes downed the Washington Capitals, 3-2. Even with the loss, Detroit is only one point behind the Flyers for the final wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference. The Capitals are also only one point back. The Pittsburgh Penguins are two behind.

The New York Islanders are now in third place in the Metropolitan Division, putting them in a playoff position. By winning, the Sabres are now only three points behind Detroit. Those teams meeting Sunday in a matinee at Little Caesars Arena....

“We played good enough to get a point, to get two points tonight,” Larkin said. “I think when you get to this time of the year, every time that you drop a game it feels like an opportunity missed. It’s been hard. The hockey’s been hard and tight. We’ve been talking about every play and making sure we make every play. We left a couple out there tonight, which makes it hurt more.”

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Sebastian Cossa denied 24 shots en route to a 3-0 Grand Rapids Griffins shutout victory over the Rockford IceHogs on Friday at Van Andel Arena.

Cossa's victory tied the home game point streak for a goaltender at 13 games (9-0-4) while it also extended his record-breaking overall point streak to 19 contests. The Griffins' win pushed their record-setting home point streak to 19 consecutive games. Jonatan Berggren stretched his point streak (8-7--15) to nine outings. Taro Hirose collected his 50th goal and 200th point as a Griffin, which made him the sixth player for Grand Rapids to accumulate 200 points and the 29th to score 50 tallies for the club. The Griffins tied their season-high five-game home winning streak.

If Im Cossa, I go into my Summer realizing that that there really is no true number 1 goalie in Detroit and I make it my aim to be that guy. The number 1 job is clearly there for the taking.

I think Cossa's ability to enter the conversation in Detroit depends on his postseason performance in GR.

Unless he is dominant, I expect him to play in GR again next season but with a heavier workload. He'll get an opportunity to play in Detroit if injuries or performance issues come up. There is no way they want him in Detroit unless he is playing at least half the games and he really isn't ready for that.

Work his tail off and his time will come.

Its magnified now on every play, Lalonde said. This is why its really good for our guys to be going through this.

Well, to me that says it all. Focus isn't about getting into the playoffs this year. It's about letting all our (veteran) players get a feel for what it takes to get in next year....

Berggren has been on a tear (knock on wood).  He had a hat trick and assist last night. Go Griffs!!!

RockyGibraltardamndogrevenge

I dont know how well Raymond knows Berggren, but Id love to see Raymond take Berggren under his wing this summer and do whatever training Raymond did last summer to be stronger and faster. Thats what Berggren needs to replace a guy like Fabbri or Sprong in the lineup.

100%. I've said before that I think Burgers has more natural goal-scoring talent than Raymond, but he lacks the "tenacity" that Lucas has always had, something he magnified when he bulked up and toughened up. If Berggren can do the same in the off-season, it'll go a long ways towards making him an effective NHL player.

If the Wings don't see that possibility in him, there will never be a better time to trade him than this summer given the year he's having in GR.

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

"Of course it's going to sting, every game is so magnified right now," coach Derek Lalonde said. "But we're right back at it Sunday. We have six games left. We have to keep at it. Missed opportunity tonight, and we have another on Sunday.

"Everyone was up against it tonight (in the playoff chase) with the competition and who they were playing. We did get help around the league but we have to care of it ourselves."...

"We played hard, good enough to get a point, or get two points," Larkin said. "When you get to this time of year every time you drop a game it feels like an opportunity missed. It's been hard hockey, hard and tight and we've been talking about every play and make sure you make every play and we felt we left a couple out there which makes it hurt more this time of year.

"We're right there and it's frustrating not to get the two points."....

"There's belief in our room," Larkin said. "There's want and going forward we have Buffalo, Washington and Pittsburgh, all teams fighting for their lives, so it doesn't get any easier. But I expect us to be ready to play."

from Kevin Allen of Detroit Hockey Now,

Young defenseman Simon Edvinsson is starting to deliver the level of consistency the Detroit Red Wings will need from him for years to come.

Edvinsson was plus-1 in the 4-3 loss to the New York Rangers and was noticeable whenever he was on the ice. Hes plus-3 in his past two games.

(Its) positive for sure, a lot of good stuff, Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. Some big moments for him. I thought he handled it pretty well.

The 6-foot-6 Swede had three hits and a blocked shot. Just that big body, gets himself out of a lot of trouble, Lalonde said. Ive really liked his compete Probably brought a little more physicality to his game than I had anticipated or seen from him in the past, which is a really sign for him and us.

continue for more on the Wings..

He needsto gethis legs stronger . Notice him falling and looking a bit awkward along the board with the puck. He'll be a beast in a couple of years.

OffSeid

This is the reason for not resigning Perron. Takes too many penalties. A lot at bad times in the game. I like his effort, just but not sure if his rewards out way his risks.

bigfrog

Perron is gritty, but just takes too many penalties at the wrong time.😝
