Last night was more of an idea of what the rest of the season will bring us. Plenty of energy, plenty of shots, missed opportunities. Goaltending that is good enough to keep us in it, but not quite good enough to win a game on its own. Jimmy Howard doesn't steal games. Bernier won't either.
They are good goalies who will win behind good teams and play well behind bad ones, only to take the L.
This team is not going to the playoffs. But they are going to be fascinating to watch. These guys are going to grow up in front of us and the tone of our posts and comments will reflect that. Decades of scouring standings and pocketing points are in the past. Watching with an eye toward next year and years later will be our norm.
The team you saw last night is the team that we will embrace this year. Youth. Mistakes. Energy. Feistiness and fights. A blue line that is comprised of middle schoolers. Forwards that are a bit more seasoned but as yet incapable of carrying this team to consistent points.
And that's ok. We'll get used to it.
Unless we don't have to. Unless the talent ferments quicker than expected. Unless the speed and the potential and health all conspire for something interesting. This year.
We will see.
