A2Y- The Talk After A Home Loss To Columbus

01/14/2023 at 9:56pm EST

Dylan Larkin up first, below find coach Lalonde and the game highlights.

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

"Our compete comes up with some momentum, I appreciate the push in the third (period), but just very disappointing to waste a performance like that in the third," Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde said. "We weren't ourselves in the first or second (periods). It's just frustrating, very frustrating, to give up easy offense to the (Patrik) Laines and (Johnny) Gaudreaus of the world."...

Then Lucas Raymond scored his 12th, on a backhander in the slot, at 15 minutes, 56 seconds, to make it 4-3 and ignite the crowd at Little Caesars Arena.

But the Jackets held on, ending what could have been a spirited comeback.

"It gave us some belief," captain Dylan Larkin said of Maatta's goal. "We had those comebacks in Pittsburgh in Buffalo (after Christmas) and it was a similar story (Saturday). We talked about not getting behind and running out of time, but what that game in Pittsburgh, it gave us some belief in those games and if we get one (goal), we can score and get back into it playing in their zone.

"We finally decided to show up in the third and ran out of time. It's unfortunate, we just didn't start. We didn't battle enough and let their top line have time and space and let them float through without stopping and making it hard on them."...

"We have the capability of rolling off wins, we flirt with it, we have done it, but we have to be on all the time," Lalonde said. "The first period was a perfect example, where our compete comes off just a little bit and if you're competing on a one to 10 (scale), we have to be in the nine to 10 range every single time."...

"We had no jump, no life on the bench, we were just kind of looking around and waiting for something good to happen and it didn't," Larkin said. "They scored four and we can't give up that lead. It's disappointing, after a good game (Thursday)."

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Grand Rapids Griffins concluded their seven-game homestand with a 1-0 shutout win over the Chicago Wolves on Saturday at Van Andel Arena, courtesy of Alex Nedeljkovic's 27 saves.

In six games with Grand Rapids, Nedeljkovic has a 0.920 save percentage, 2.30 goals against average and a 3-2-1 ledger.

more on the game... Vrana did play, had one shot but the box score does not show time on ice...

via Kevin Allen of Detroit Hockey Now,

After his team fell behind 4-0 to Columbus, Lalonde moved Robby Fabbri to center between Tyler Bertuzzi and Lucas Raymond. “And it worked,” Lalonde said. “From the line change on, we got a little spark.”

It’s all about options for Lalonde. With Pius Suter scratched, he was down a center. He wanted to move Michael Rasmussen to the wing. “Sometimes for a spark I like Ras on the wing,” Lalonde said. “..Ras on the wing is a guy who will hunt pucks, create things off a forecheck. We wanted that and work back from there.”...

Coaches love Fabbri for his versatility. Jeff Blashill used him occasionally at center when Dylan Larkin was out. Fabbri is effective. He was 5-2 on faceoffs against Columbus. “Fabbs was good there — he won some draws and the line had some jump,” Lalonde said....

The eye test and various analytics point to the Red Wings being a better team. But the halfway point of the season, the Red Wings are performing at the same level there were last season.

They were 18-17-6 for 42 points after 41 games under Blashill in 2021-22. Under Lalonde after 41 games, the Red Wings are 18-16-7 for 43 points.

“There’s definitely areas where we’ve progressed,” captain Larkin said. “After tonight’s game I don’t really want to get into that right now. It’s clear that we’ve progressed. We’re more deep. But we’ve been talking about it, getting on a run, stringing some wins together. Then tonight happens and it’s frustrating. That’s kind of been the story of the season. We win two or three and then we can’t find the fourth or fifth and get on a nice run.

This was the worst loss of the season for me. Unbelievable.

Not starting on time.

Talking about compete.

Talking about your offersive guys needing to play a 200 ft. Game

Lines in a blender.

And the same record as last year.

At least he stopped saying process I guess.

The loss was also on Lalonde. Not a good move to play Seider with Chiarot. Expect more the same outcome if this is done. Just saying it was Raymond’s 13th goal.
