What If Chicago?

from Rick Morrissey of the Chicago Sun-Times,

Forget the bump in the ice Tuesday. Indulge me while I traffic in hypotheticals.

What if the Blackhawks cruise through the rest of the playoffs?

What if they win their second consecutive Stanley Cup and their third in five seasons?

What if they don’t stop there?

What if the parades continue for several more years, and the city streets have a permanent layer of confetti?

Would that be the greatest accomplishment in Chicago sports history, given the difficulties and vagaries of hockey?

what if we found the key to nuclear fusion?
what if we could get big money out of politics?
what if every sports reporter refused to be stupid?

When the Red Wings, Lions, Tigers and Pistons all win their respective championships in a single year, Detroit will be tops in sports cities.

What if Rick Morrissey had a fuching clue?

Blackhawks could eventually surpass Bulls as Chicago’s greatest—is the freaking title of his article!!

The Bulls had the greatest player of all time in Michael Jordan when they won their six championships in eight seasons.

The Blackhawks are close to this, how? No greatest player of all time whose name is known around the world. And as of right now they’ve won two Stanley cups in the last five seasons. And have won the league five times (one short of the Bulls six in eight seasons) in the last ... 87 years.

One and a half cups. That truncated season is a big asterisk.

That truncated season is a big asterisk.

I don’t really buy this. Every team in the playoffs that year had the same opportunity and played the same number of regular season games. If the Wings won year, I certainly wouldn’t be talking about any punctuation but an exclamation point.

What if Rick Morrissey actually watched hockey games on a regular basis before April?

The endurance run of half a season does not compromise a team like a full season does. The playoffs are a battle of attrition and no team entered the playoffs worn down.

Plus, Chicago won it so…
