from Scott Burnside of ESPN,
Remember when the New York Rangers were being praised early in the season as an elite Eastern Conference power and a Stanley Cup contender? That seems a long time ago as the Rangers lurch towards the end of the calendar year.
After taking a 3-1 first-period lead against the Metropolitan Division-leading Washington Capitals on Sunday, the Rangers allowed six unanswered goals and were buried by a final score of 7-3. Washington now leads the Rangers by eight points in the Metro, which presents the enticing potential of a first-round showdown between the Rangers and New York Islanders come playoff time.
The Rangers' problems are perplexing, though, having ambled through a 2-6-2 December that has seen them allow 31 goals in their past six games. Yowzers. We also haven't seen the Henrik Lundqvist we know and love, with the King allowing 20 goals in his past five appearances as coach Alain Vigneault tries to figure out a crumbling defense that has seen veterans Dan Girardi and Ryan McDonagh have struggle mightily.
So, is this just a blip on the radar or is this team settling into a kind of non-threatening mediocrity that will foreshadow how their season ends?
