Wrapping Up Detroit's Win Over The Pittsburgh Penguins

03/28/2018 at 7:48am EDT

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

A little bit of the old and new combined to make the present a little more enjoyable Tuesday around the Red Wings.

On a night veteran defenseman Niklas Kronwall notched his 400th point and young defenseman Joe Hicketts earned the first two points of his career, the Red Wings earned a rare win, a 5-2 victory over the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins.

The victory was only the second in the last 14 games (2-11-1) for the Red Wings, and it certainly will not help their odds of getting a higher draft pick.

But forget all that. The Red Wings needed a victory badly, and to do it against Pittsburgh made it that much special.

Below, George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press on Joe Hicketts and the extended game highlights.

That Hicketts led the Wings with six blocked shots against the Penguins didn't surprise his coach.

"He has guts," Blashill said.

Hicketts may not look like an NHL player, but the Wings will quickly find out if he is one over the remainder of the season.

"He doesn't really match the model of NHL defensemen, in terms of size and skating and skill set," Blashill said pregame. "He doesn't look like an NHL player. Now some guys break the mold because of character and heart and swagger. I think he's a guy that can potentially break the mold of what successful NHL defensemen are. We'll see."

Blashill coached another undersized defenseman, Torey Krug, on the Indiana Ice in 2008-2009. Krug went on to star at Michigan State and now plays for the Boston Bruins.

"He does have some similarities to Torey," Blashill said of Hicketts.

Blashill said Krug improved his skating at a younger age and Hicketts needs to do the same.

"Joe's going to have to go to work this summer and keep pushing his body to where nobody talks about Joe's skating next year," Blashill said. "That's what Torey did.
"They've got very similar swagger and chip on their shoulders."

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
