Man, if ya hated Nielsen on waivers and back in the lineup the next night, you’re gonna flip your lid today.

Ya, heaven forbid you let Svech play… I mean, this team is performing at such a high achievement rate, wouldn’t want to put a guy in to see what he could do. Instead lets put Nielsen on the top line.
Because nothing says lineup positions are given based on performance better than rewarding a guy with like 5 goals in the last 2 years

We all love to hate on Toronto, and their GM, but honestly… he’s brought in abundance of skill, speed, creativity…. and a coach that lets them play that way.  Will they win? Probably once approaching a happy medium.  But imagine, getting guys who can play fast, creative offensively minded hockey and letting play that way… and not this whole “play the right way” we don’t score, but play the right way….
I’m not in the fire blashhill camp… but how about we start building a new age team and worrying less about results.

Imagine replacing some of Nielsen, Helm, Glendenning, Erne, Gagner, Fipulla….
with
Svech, Bertuzzi (once healthy), Ras, Smith, Hirose.

None of those guys have looked out of place, so the argument of going down and showing at the AHL level first…. would we really be that much worse?  Maybe a tiny bit, but we’d be way more exciting.

Unless the plan is to suck and get a high pick again.
They really needed to get a C this past off season as well.  The Fabbri thing hasn’t worked great, and Namestikov ... meh.

Anhow, so dissapointing.

At this point I’m just impressed Blashill continues to find ways to make this complete dumpster fire of a season even worse. Bravo, bald man.

Also, what am I missing with Svechnikov? I can’t wait until the 4d chess plan that’s being played is revealed because his handling this season is absolutely mind boggling.

Is what it is.  I’ll be watching tonight.  We still have our PP streak going?  Hard to beat last year’s point record, might as well shoot to break another.

It’s just too bad that ESPN isn’t following the team with a film crew like those “Road to the Winter Classic” series the league used to do.

Suggested titles could be:

Road to the outhouse

Road to ruin

Road to the bottom

Return of the Dead Wings

Dead Wings Part II ( Holland’s Revenge)

Seriously though, I agree with most that watching Ras, Smith, Svech, etc would be at least interesting. I honestly don’t know why we contribute to play the guys we just waived, but I hope there is at least some reason that SY knows and we don’t.

From now on, Blashill posting of the game roster shall be known as “ineup”: the “L” comes directly after the game.

The Wings are tied for last place.

“Like, nothing would upset me [Blash] more than if we didn’t maximize the growth process of our young players.

LMFAO, while 4th line vets continue to play.

The good news this is a short season. Can next season be somehow short too?
I still cannot get over the fact that our “rebuilding” team is the oldest in the league.

On top of that Palmer…teams that in theory started their slide after us, somehow are on the upwards slope higher up already then us.
You know, I mean, I get Holland tried to keep us in there for arguably too long but I can understand why.  He did recover somewhat by trying to maximize picks, but he was doing so with dead wood instead of moving guys when they had value before they declined too much.  But man, the drafting was attrocious…. whether that was Wright or ... Holland… but we have hardly anything to show for it.
Would Cholo or Ras be playing more and developed further on other teams?  Are other teams just drafting better or are they developing better?
*sigh*

Maybe both, but it’s frustrating. Ras is #9 overall pick who maybe in the best case scenario will be a 3rd line player and PP specialist. Zadina is 6th overall pick, I honestly see nothing more than a good complimentary player (and you really want to get a star at #6). Cholo #20, still not in NHL.
5 years after the draft. Svechnikov #18, drafted 6 years ago, passed through waivers.
Larkin at #15 and Mantha at #18 were good picks, but it’s almost like a decade ago.
We’ll see if we have better luck with Moritz, Raymond and next draft, but again I doubt we are talking about anything elite there, just good players, possibly better than what we have now.

The Kings seem to have a knack for drafting and otherwise
finding young players and are ahead of us in large part because of that.

The did delay their rebuild some in part because of more recent success.
Their best players when they were contenders are therefore also not as old but
guys like Dustin Brown and Doughty and Kopitar are still making an impact as
the supporting cast rapidly improves and grows in depth around them.

But they seem to be finding multiple NHL players per draft.
They could even waste Erik Cernak, renting Ben Bishop in a
misguided pretty recent attempt at making another playoff run.
And they’ve got good young NHL depth on D anyway, with more coming.

Btw, two picks after we drafted Rasmussen, they picked Gabe Vilardi, a center who’s
bounced back from injury trouble and is making an impact on the Kings now.

The Kings look there’re setting up to be good for a long time and are ahead of schedule but not rushing it so ensure they keep stockpiling talent. Holland and Wright and whoever else was making most of the picks did a poor job compared to so many of their peers.

So ya, Vilardi is a great example Lefty.  There were other players taken after Ras making an impact too, not a ton yet though.

But Vilardi, one criticism was his speed.  So, the fact he’s contributing right now… is that because they are giving him the opportunity or did he “earn it”?  Ras made an impact the first year and has looked like he belonged at least as much as some of the dead weight here.  So are we causing Ras’ development stall or was it a bad pick, or both?

Neilsson, Filpulla and Gagne all in the lineup. That’ll get scoring up.

I kind of get what is happening with Svech. Play him once and he’ll have to clear waivers again to move him back to taxi squad or AHL. But at this point, he’s about out of time in the organization. Lets just put him in the NHL lineup for the rest of the year.

I honestly have no idea what to make of Rasmussen yet.

Are they trying to pound a square peg into a round hole
trying to make him a shutdown center?

If he can develop the confidence to use his size consistently
and keep improving his skating to the point his size is more relevant all
over the ice, he could still make an impact. He doesn’t have to be a crusher
let alone a fighter - just willing to use his size. I could still see him being a ten goal a season 3/4th liner who score mostly right around the net.

In a way Vilardi being injured a while may have given him time to
actually get stronger without the no win WHL or NHL dilemma the Wings faced.
I don’t know how exactly Vilardi is being deployed. Having Kopitar to tutor you can’t hurt. And Todd McLellan coaching. If he ends up being a good second line center I can’t see Rasmussen ever matching that. Maybe LA can play more younger players because their core veterans were stars in their prime and are still pretty good?

Hockey DB is always fun and a little depressing to scan for various teams’ picks.
By Holland’s standards you have to get two NHL players per draft and ideally three.
Every team overlooks much better players sometimes. And the Ras, Vilardi draft was not a strong one as you say. But they seem of have a couple players from every draft who’ve ended up on their roster plus very good prospect depth.

Good point re: Svechnikov and waivers - but who would claim him at this point?
Seems inevitable he’s waived or demoted sooner or later.

What is this yo-yo they have him on?
Are they evaluating him in practice?
Or is he at this point like calling up McIlrath to
the taxi squad purely to have an extra while
Cholowski and Lindstrom actually play in GR?

It seems like you could hardly frustrate and demoralize a player already frustrated by
injuries any more if you planned to. If he’s just not good enough they’re not obligated to play him, but with all of these non-contributing veterans wouldn’t you at least want to see him in several actual NHL games? Surely we have enough guys who can check and play PK. Would a big strong guy with decent hands around the net hurt to have in the lineup?

That was the impression I’ve got. It’s a bit disappointing that such a high pick seems destined to a 3/4th line role but it is better than nothing. Perhaps it is who they envision as a replacement for Glendening. He might never be as good defensively but it certainly wouldn’t hurt to have a little more offense out of the bottom half of the lineup.
