Keep An Eye On Vasily Podkolzin At The NHL Draft

from Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet,

What the Blackhawks do after Hughes/Kakko affects everyone else. But, there is another variable, and that is who takes Russian winger Vasily Podkolzin.

I’ve seen more of Thanos the past two years than Podkolzin, but certainly know his reputation. He’s a talented, talented player — as skilled as anyone available in June. But he’s locked into an overseas contract for at least another two years, which limits the number of NHL teams willing to consider it at this time.

“If you need help next season or the year after, you can’t take him,” one exec said this week. “But if you can afford to wait…it could be like a delayed powerball victory.”

No GM is more secure than Steve Yzerman, returning to the scene of his greatest triumphs. Even before his announcement, there was a belief the Red Wings liked Podkolzin’s game. The organization has a great history with Russian players, and Yzerman had success with drafting them in Tampa Bay. They won’t be afraid, if he’s the No. 1 guy on their list.

I think thre Wings are in no rush to win a cup but there are probably other teams (after Hughes/Kakko) that might take a shot at the Russian.  If he is available when the Wings pick it will tell a lot about his drafting thinking.  We need a Damn Russian!!!

You’re never going to have effective dmen if you don’t start drafting them.

Is the rumor about Datsyuk possibly coming back and drafting this guy in the works?Something to think about.

cn, I haven’t seen anything on Datsyuk except for the original report about 3 weeks ago.

Friedman does point out the prospect is committed to an overseas contract for at least two more years.

Seems to me that if Pav was even considering coming back to the NHL he’d be playing at the Worlds, just to show he can hack it at that level.

As far as Podkolzin goes, I think Stevie would rather have him playing in North America so he can keep a close eye on his development, rather than having it completely out of the organ-Y-zation’s hands for two years. He may turn into a star, but there should be other high-end talent available that we can keep closer to home, or even get on to the big club roster before 2021.

Watch Mantha at TSN after his five point game today.

Great Britain had 6 shots after 2 periods, finished with 12 for the game.

Good for Mantha. Still ticked about the Slackhawks moving up from 12th to the 3rd pick in the draft. angry

Podkolzin has dropped far on some draft lists… into the teens. I guess there are questions on his hockey IQ. He’s technically skilled and has the body to be your typical NHLer, but there are questions if he will become more than a good 3rd liner.

/haven’t seen him play, just reading the Athletic

Quote of the week, an NHL GM, referencing Ken Holland’s mammoth new $5M/year contract in Edmonton: “I can’t wait to argue with my owner that I’m 50 per cent as good as he is.”

So far there are about as many potential NHL Goalies being drafted as DMen or for that matter bottom 6.

Get used to watching the old Wings (over paid) taking up spots on the roster.  Thanks and adios KH.  Does Stevie Y have some miracle deals up his sleeve? Hope so, if not ,GR will have a better team than the Wings, maybe, LOL

Agree re: drafting D. Not taking wild reaches but it’s the obvious area of need.

Tough year to end up lower in the last few weeks and then drop.
No guarantees I know.

Three things I appreciate about Stevie at the helm.
Won’t overdo loyalty. I trust him more to make a real, creative, player(s) for player(s) hockey trade(s).
When we heard “stocking up on forwards to help trade for D” before I never believed it.
When we heard a year or two ago “we think we can maybe make a couple tweaks and get back in [playoffs]
it sounded like it might lead to a bad signing or desperation move. I’m not trying to bash Holland. He wised up and made some necessary moves the last season or two for sure. But I think Yzerman can accumulate the best pieces available and be a little more creative and using them to get what we need.

Witkowski’s contract is over
Vanek contract is over
Kronwall contract is over
Ericson done after ‘19
Daley done after ‘19
Howard’s done after ‘19
Helm done after ‘20

So I assume your talked about 2 of 22 players, Neilson and Abby?

Don’t set expectations at miracles, seriously, don’t.  Yzerman’s press conference seemed very content about another top 10 pick next year to me.  Rebuild is well underway, and is continuing.

When is the next train to St. Louis?

That question has as much to do with the subject as yours did.
