Do You Agree, Detroit Is Still Hockeytown?

from Brandon Champion of Mlive,

Sorry Vegas, Detroit isn't giving up the Hockeytown title anytime soon.

According to a study released by the personal finance website Wallethub on Wednesday, June 6, the Motor City is the second-best place for hockey fans in the United States. It trails only Boston, according to Wallethub.

To arrive at its rankings, a panel of sports experts from around the U.S. ranked 73 U.S. cities based on 21 key indicators of a good hockey city including ticket prices, stadium capacity and performance level of each city's teams.

Detroit, which is obviously bolstered by the Detroit Red Wings and their 11 Stanley Cups, finished No. 1 in the NHL rank.

They only sellout games by papering seats

Their TV ratings for hockey lose out to areas 1/2 their size.

F no, Detroit isn’t a hockeytown.

Well, that wasn’t the question, was it?

I’ve always thought that moniker was cringe worthy. Yeah we are proud (were proud) of this team, but calling it “Hockeytown” was a bit much.

I’m trying something new and bringing the #content into the YouTube Editorial realm.
Here’s my first video:

With the metro-Detroit youth programs/teams (Compuware and Little Cesars for instance) being successful and the US Hockey National Development Program being in Ann Arbor, I’ve always thought of the metro area of Detroit as being a “hockey town”.  Obviously the Wings of 95ish-09 were very dominant and added to the hockey town moniker, but the youth programs have provided so much talent to the national level, it’s very impressive.

So yes…Hockeytown.  Not for the Red Wings of today, but for the development and youth leagues in the Metro Detroit area that have produced hundreds of NHL players.

Ugh. Yes, I’ve always hated, HATED the whole “Hockeytown” thing. All it gave us was a hideous logo, an even worse song, and a bunch of lazy columns by people outside the area declaring this place Hockeytown or that place Hockeytown.

Enough.

As a state, Michigan is a very good place for hockey.

The analysis really needs to look at just the past 10 years, but I digress. TreKronor nails it but I’ll add college hoc key to it

Hopefully the Red Wings will make the term “Hockeytown” proud once again. cheese

Michigan is a hockey town, aside from Minnesota it boasts one of the strongest youth organizations in the US, we have college, USA Development team, AHL, NHL, and other minors/juniors.

This fan base on the other hand, should be bandwagon town, the vocal portion of which in general knows very little about the game itself
