Gonna keep rolling with Helm on the second line, huh? Really need to evaluate what he can do with 18 minutes a night I guess.
I get that losing helps us in the long run, I’ve been advocating for that since 2015. But there is a good way and a bad way. A good way would be to reduce veteran TOI, and let youngsters get their feet wet to learn from their mistakes without fear of getting benched for not back checking fast enough. The bad way is what Blashill is doing. Now they’ll burn a year of Svech’s ELC, which reduces his value, and then say he isn’t grabbing his cheese or whatever stupid line they use, and then be surprised when he doesn’t progress as you had hoped.

1st Line (because I am resigned to):
Bertuzzi-Zetterberg-Nyquist

2nd Line (our only hope for the future):
Chevy-Larkin-Mantha

Sink or Swim Line (no commentary needed):
Frk-Nielsen-AA

Match Line (It was so important earlier this year!):
Booth/Witkowski-Glenny-Abby

Helm (Waivers)

Yes, let’s play Booth tonight for Svech. #77 did not make a great impact yet playing 5 minutes per game on a 4th line with Glen as his center and tonight is a crucial game, a must win really.

With every day passing, I have stronger and stronger feeling that nothing good will happen to our team if KH and Blashill remain employed.

Helm, Larkin, Mantha.  Not to worry, that line won’t be together longer than five minutes. wink

You’re right. Abdelkader will be slotted in for Mantha at some point.

At least he was an NHL goalie for that week or two before Holland traded him.

The Flyers haven’t had really good goaltending since the days of Hextall, and even that was iffy at times.

Mrazek going to the Flyers just had FAIL written all over it since day one.

But he was DET"s future!  Blah blah blah!!!

In the end, the best outcome for DET might be what Mrazek is giving them:  qualifies to make the 4th into a 3rd… but is enough of a wreck that he won’t meet the other criteria and therefore isn’t making DET look dumb for letting him go.

I really wonder what a dumpster fire PHI’s defense must be if they’re failing Mrazek’ even more than DET"s pitiful defense was.

Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

On his 24th birthday, Feb. 14, 2016, Mrazek gave up five goals on 22 shots. He went 6-6-1 the rest of the season, with a 3.44 goals-against average and .896 save percentage. A restricted free agent that summer, he filed for arbitration but the sides reached a deal themselves, setting on two years, $8 million. The Wings still saw Mrazek, who they drafted 141st overall in 2010, as their future.

Mrazek struggled again in 2016-17. He lost the starting job to Jimmy Howard, and even briefly to Jared Coreau. Mrazek finished with a .901 save percentage and 3.04 goals-against average in 50 games. The Wings exposed him in the 2017 expansion draft, but nobody wanted Mrazek.

That finally changed when the Flyers lost both Brian Elliott and Michal Neuvirth to injuries just as Philadelphia was trying to shore up a playoff spot. They sent a 2018 conditional fourth-round pick and a 2019 conditional third-round pick to Detroit, reflecting Mrazek’s inconsistency.

“Pete has proven through a time period of 30 games or whatever he can be an elite goalie in the league,” Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. “The next step for him is to prove it over 60. But there’s no question he’s proven he can be elite in those periods of time. I thought it was a smart move by Philly. He’s a guy that when he gets hot can really get hot. They were in a tough spot, but I thought it was a smart move by them because he’s a guy who can play that elite level.”

more on and from Mrazek…

In the meantime we have not won in 3 weeks and are 28th in the league. That’s OK because we are rebuilding, the team is too young and we have $30 mil under the cap. Oh, wait…We are the oldest team in the league and with the highest payroll. Is Ilitch paying any attention to these mind boggling facts. Oldest team, highest payroll, 28th in the standings, 10 game losing streak, Z playing 20 minutes per game. Helm and Abby right behind.

The Flyers received second- and fourth-round picks as well as a fourth-round choice the following year.

The Blue Jackets get the promising Bobrovsky, who went 42-23-10 with a 2.73 goals-against average and .909 save percentage in two seasons with the Flyers.

I guess that was one trade they really regret.

The Jackets and Flyers ended up, indirectly but more or less, swapping
Bobrovsky and Mason.

Mason had some moments in Philly, but of course was soon out the revolving door.

Both teams bought low, but Columbus had a little bigger sample size on Mason
and made the right bet after Bobrovsky had a down year.

Interesting to see if he can make some noise in the playoffs.

I’m still holding out hope that there will be some kind of meaningful change between the end of the season and the draft. It’s becoming more and more obvious that KH isn’t going anywhere. Ok. Do something to make this team better. Move an Abdelkader, Helm, Dekeyser, Glendening, whatever. Get rid of a prospect/pick or two and get rid of one or two of these old, expensive pieces of garbage.

If KH stays, Blashill stays, and they roll into camp next year with the same blue line and same set of wingers then it’s going to be boycott/paper bags over the head-ugly. Chris hasn’t said much of anything about the team/management since Mike died. Starting to get really nervous with the impression that KH is still steering this ship.

Lots of rambling, lots of anger. Just play entertaining hockey and show me that they’re trying to change things for the better…....

Those contracts are impossible to move without giving up like a first rounder to the other team and that’s not something we can afford to do at this point.

Sam Donnellon of Philly.com,

Mrazek said he talked to Red Wings left wing Andreas Athanasiou this morning, and concluded: “I don’t know what he’s going to do. Is he going to do the same move he always does or is he going to [do something different]?”

Mrazek was also asked if, after platooning for much of the year, being traded into a playoff race and into a starter’s role had renewed his excitement.

“It’s always fun to be in a group with a chance to make the playoffs,” he said. “It was really good to get a fresh starts, especially with my contract almost up. I’m really excited for the opportunity.”

He pretty much always goes backhand forehand when he has a breakaway, which is almost the only time he scores.

Who was the Russian with Columbus whose biggest problem was he had exactly ONE move… not Zherdev…

FILATOV.  That’s the one.  I distinctly remember him his rookie year being featured in a Rookies game and it becoming VERY clear it was the only move he had in his toolbox, and then once everyone else knew it he was quickly drummed out of the league.

Unfortunately, it’s like you can see the future, MA. I’m impressed. What about tonight’s MegaMillions numbers. Any visions there? I could use $225M. grin

As for why they called up Svech, Blashill said they were keeping him for the rest of the year so he could get a good look at him. That’s actually a misquote.

It’s been revealed that what he actually said was: “The kid’s got a great head of hair and I wanted to have him on the bench for 52 minutes each game so I could get a good look at his hair from behind. I’m thinking about getting plugs in the offseason and I think I might model my new look on Svechy.”

And that has to be true because there’s no other plausible explanation for taking your top goal-scoring prospect in GR and playing him on the 4th line for less than 8 minutes a night.

Damien Brunner! THAT’S who AA reminds me of. Deke and then flip the puck top shelf… That’s what they both do /did, and that was about it.

Brunner didn’t last long in the NHL…
