The Wings don’t play again until next Tuesday when they host the Stanley Cup champs.

I will be around during the break in the schedule for any news from the Wings and of course around the NHL.

Stop by when you can.

HSJ tweet,

Jeff Blashill on pulling goalie with 5:15 to play: “We don’t score very easy, and it was an advantageous situation for us with the icing. It’s a calculated risk and when those decisions end up in your net, then it looks like a bad decision.” Red Wings lost, 5-2, at Carolina.

The NHL calls it a dangerous trip.

NEW YORK (March 4, 2021)—Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Brett Pesce has been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for a dangerous trip against Detroit Red Wings forward Robby Fabbri during NHL Game No. 365 tonight in Carolina, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced.

The incident occurred at 5:28 of the second period. Pesce was assessed a minor penalty for tripping.

Have it ever resulted in a different outcome?

some notes…

Nice way to finish the game before it actually ended loveable coach ! . ..lifting up the goalie with over 5 minutes is sooooooo stupid, it took them 5 seconds to score and destroy our slim chances left.

A good not to Zadina who look like a goal scorer tonight
¸
A good not to Ras who look like a center, does everything they ask him to do; he skates much better, plays physical something the other can’t do, plays hard all the time. He SHOULD be a keeper…but i wouldnt be surprise to see him being send down.

When the Canes decided to put pressure on us in our zone in the second period we couldn’t match their intensity, we started to look…and wait. On the third (or second ?) Canes goal Mantha and Ryan were on the ice and they were looking looking and looking…and when the Canes scored i thought they were going to applaud…
In our zone our tenacity, intensity and physicality is pond hockey style…its a bit sad to watch.

Other than Ras and Zadina the positives are not easy to find.
Oh by the way the Schev brothers were on the ice tonight…although i noticed only one..guess who..

Seriously our own Schev is never going to crack this line-up…he’s become slower than before his knee injury. He might score occasionnally cause he still has decent hands up close..but to use them you need to be…close (to the net) !

it’s also a bit sad to see that our injured players just don’t come back…and boy don’t we need them badly !

5K is nothing, give pesce 3 games to comtemplate the possibility of causing a concussion or worse - so dangerous when it’s unexpected like that - fool..

You know who else like to pull the goalie waaaaaay too early?  Patrick Roy.  And they don’t let him coach in the NHL anymore because he did stupid stuff like that.

Another loss, sadly not unexpected. That said, a loss with Sevchnikov, Rasmussen, and Zadina getting significant ice time is at least a small step in the right direction.

Now, get something for Ryan, Staal, Glendenning, and Bernier and call up Cholowski, Hirose, Smith and let youth be served Win or Lose. The season was over before it began, so why not go down finding out who can play instead of guys we already know can’t.

That 2nd Zadina goal was a freakin’ goalscorer’s goal.  DET has seriously lacked that.  They need to not mess things up with him.

I agree that DET needs to now transition to bringing up the rest of the “kids” that are ready and keep them up.  Cholowski and Hirose first I guess.

I absolutely HATE pulling the goalie that early, and if you are going to pull him at least wait until you get possession of the puck before doing it. Nothing annoys me more than losing an o-zone faceoff and letting the other team skate it out to center to pot an easy one. That being said, the majority of the hockey people i follow on twitter that I consider to be smarter than I am agreed with the call so i’m not going to die on that hill. They lost the game in the first three minutes of the 3rd, not the last 5.

The Pesce slew-foot was complete garbage and it would be nice if the wings had someone on the roster to smash his face in to let him know that $hit doesn’t fly.

Good for Zadina, has to feel good to have a couple find the twine. Ras looked like he belonged. Not sure if he’ll ever be a big producer but he seems to be using his size more and isn’t afraid to battle. Another assist for Svech. Wasn’t his best game but I think he’s getting his feet under him.

Not much else to say about that one. Auction those jerseys off and let’s never speak of them again. Enjoy a couple days off and hopefully they can add a larkin or bertuzzi or stetcher back to the lineup next week.

Not sure where else to put this.

Can’t say I was clamoring “make a claim” at the time.
Not sure how it works with having claimed Djoos recently.
I’m guessing a Carlsson was waived before Stecher went down.
Still we’ve had key forewords injured. That Biega got into a recent game is silly.
Lots of players with some upside are being waived and few are making claims.
But this was a big (if gangly) former (late) first round pick who might’ve been worth a look. Now he’s playing on the Jackets second pairing. 6’5” defender who excels at a first pass and is poised with the puck. Surely we could have woken up someone in Sweden to ask what they knew about him.

Maybe we should trade Zadina right now, like we should have traded Bobby Ryan after three games wink

Watching those two replays, it’s kinda refreshing to see someone who can score on his own shot - not scoring on a rebound or tip.

Random thoughts….

Watching Zadina’s reaction after missing that red line in breakaway I could just tell he was about to go off, and frankly I loved it. I didn’t see 2 goals coming, but could just tell he was going to be dangerous and flying.  There’s just something you can tell/see/feel from a players shoulders and head after missing those as to whether its a woe is me, or I’m a blood thirsty killer and i’m out for blood.  I kinda wish we were not taking 4 games off now, because that’s the kind of something that could setup a roll. He’s much more of a rounded player than a “shooter” he’s a good transporter of the puck too.

Hronek is struggling as our #1, he’s a good Dman, but he’s over his head, and its hurting or has hurt his growth as a player.  Replacing him Hronek with DJoos on the top unit, as was moving Mantha opposite Ryan.

Here’s a thought Anthony Mantha, when you don’t have a goalie behind you but you DO have 2 dmen, you press the guy with the freaking puck, you don’t let him ready measure aim and fire into an open net and try to play goalie 6ft from him. You’re 6’6 your stick is another 6ft probably, push him.

The tape is out on Bernier eh, top cheese? Oh wait that is most goalies.  Our d scheme collapses and closes the gimmie passing lanes, but it leaves the top open and we need to have better sticks on pucks from our forwards in the dzone, and on the backside need to be more accountable to sticks in front of our crease on rebounds.

  Make that…

Replacing Hronek with DJoos on the top PP unit has really helped, DJoos has a lot more offensive talent and passing ability despite missing the target last night, as was moving Mantha opposite Ryan to not give away where we are trying to move the puck.
