I'd say its about time for Stevie to get to work.

The question is with what? I don't think you're going to like the answer.

1) Working trades for high end forwards known to be on the market (Pierre-Luc Dubois, Alex DeBrincat, Brock Boeser)?

2) goalies? (Connor Hellebuyck, John Gibson, Carter Hart)

3) RHD? (32 yr old Erik Karlsson, 33 yr old Tyler Myers, 35 yr old Jeff Petry, or 30 yr old Colton Parayko, or 24 yr old Sean Durzi)

4) guys teams are listening on? (William Nylander, Mitch Marner)

5) Trading up in the draft?

6)Re-signing Seider and Raymond to 8 yr deals?

I mean the 2023 off-season to do list for playing roster (not coaching) is pretty much the same as the 2022 off-season to do list. The exceptions are instead of saying remake the defense--it's now remake the right side of the defense. Instead of debating whether or not to commit money or  trade the player currently under a reasonable contract (Bertuzzi and  Hronek) the Wings must do that with Kubalik and Perron. Instead of  biding time for more prospects to arrive and signing pieces that can  hold them over (Copp and Perron)--they must decide on the direction of the rebuild (do they take a bigger step back and reset the timeline again or do they spend/trade to start a playoff cycle)?

They've wasted Raymonds and Seiders ELC's cap hits and prime years of Larkin's (and the now gone via trade of Bertuzzi's and Hronek's) careers.

So to me, the direction has been set. SY did a soft reset of the rebuild to work around not Larkin's, Bertuzzi's, [Vrana's], or Hronek's prime years--but to build towards an in-their-prime of Raymond and Seider. That won't occur for 4 years. So SY's window is to try to build towards that--not make this team compete next year or the following. Thus he doesn't really have to get to work the way you think.

You make some really good points, but it will not play well in Detroit if the changes/additions he makes over the summer land them in 7th (or even 8th) in the Atlantic next year. This rebuild is going slower than turning the Titanic. Drafting middle of the first round year after year, and the inability in the draft to get a 1C or 40 goal scorer has really set this team back. I don't think the Wings fans have the patience to wait for 4 more years 'just to make the playoffs'. Short of maybe Seider and possibly Raymond, none of these players he has drafted seem to have great upside. They have a lot of pieces from the drafts of the last 4 years, but not a whole lot to show for guys who can make a big impact at age 21 or 22.

Good points DCA. However, I agree with exor54 to the extent that it is

time for Saint Stevie to bust a move. Pick any 3 points off your list

and get them done in the next 30 days. Inspire us Stevie. This isn't

rocket science. The Pause & Ponder pace is wearing thin.
Today is yesterday's tomorrow....

As far as re-sign Sieder (8 yrs x 8-8.5M is my estimate) and Raymond (8 years x 7.75M---thank Cole Caufield's contract) those are the only assets necessary for that point.

As far as the others, well that's an issue. They don't have the assets to do 3 points (from the trades list).

Their assets by category:

  1. A) untouchable: Seider, Raymond, Larkin
  1. B) highly unlikely in a trade: Simon Edvinsson
  1. C) extremely valuable: 2023 1st round #9, Marco Kasper, Sebastian Cossa, 2023 1st round #17, 2024 1st round (DET),
  1. D) very valuable: 2024 1st round (BOS), 2023 2nd round #41, 2023 2nd round #42, 2023 2nd round #43
  1. E) valuable: Jake Walman (10 team NTC), William Wallinder, Michael Rasmussen, Jonatan Berggren (could be a cat F by some team's valuations)
  1. F) of value: David Perron (10 team NTC), Dominik Kubalik, Andrew Copp (10 team NTC)
  1. G) extra pieces needed for a trade: Joe Veleno, Albert Johansson, Elmer Soderblom, Carter Mazur, Shai Buium
  1. H) the I can fix them by another GM: Zadina, Chiarot

say you want  #1) a high end forward: you'll part with: 1x category C), 2x category D)'s, and 2x cat G)'s

for #2) goalies: depends but in general 2x cat D)'s

for #3) probably 1x cat D) and a cat E)

for #4) depends but probably 2x cat C)'s, 2x cat D)'s, and 1x cat F) OR 2x cat G)'s

and another GM might demand a Zadina thrown in for good measure on any of these trades.

So while you might be able to do 1 I'm listening trade or 2 other trades---doing 2 trades for top 3 forwards and a top goalie--highly unlikely.

I can see a target of Pierre-Luc Dubois and pivoting to DeBrincat when the price gets too high then adding a middle tier RHD (say a Petry or Myers). But these aren't the 40 goal scorers that are going to move the needle to become playoff contenders.

via the Columbus Blue Jackets,

The Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired defenseman Damon Severson from the New Jersey Devils in exchange for a third-round pick, 80th overall, in the 2023 NHL Draft, club general manager Jarmo Kekalainen announced today. The deal was consummated after Severson signed an eight-year, $50 million contract through the 2030-31 National Hockey League season with New Jersey.

Severson (pronounced SEE-vuhr-suhn) has recorded 58 goals and 205 assists for 263 points with 388 penalty minutes in 647 career appearances with the Devils since making his NHL debut in 2014-15. He has also scored seven game-winning goals and tallied 12-63-75 on the power play, while averaging 21:11 of ice time during his nine NHL campaigns. The 28-year-old registered 7-26-33 with 38 penalty minutes, two game-winning goals, 115 blocked shots, 102 shots on goal and a +9 plus/minus rating on 19:57 of ice time in 81 appearances in 2022-23.

"Damon is a versatile defenseman who has great vision, moves the puck extremely well, has good size and can play heavy minutes at both ends of the ice," said Kekalainen. "We are excited to have him join the Blue Jackets as he will be a very important part of our blueline for many years to come."

The Melville, Saskatchewan native was selected by New Jersey in the second round, 60th overall, at the 2012 NHL Draft. He has collected 30 or more points five times in his career and twice notched 11 or more goals. He led New Jersey defensemen and set career highs in goals (tied), assists, points, power play goals and time on ice in 2021-22 after finishing with 11-35-46, 57 penalty minutes and five power play goals, while averaging 23:36 TOI in 80 contests. Severson played in every one of his team's games in three-straight seasons from 2018-21 and has played 80 or more contests four times in his career, including 2018-19 when he racked up 11-28-39 and 58 PIM in 82 contests.

The 6-2, 205-pound defenseman has represented Canada at several international tournaments. He helped the country win silver medals at the 2019 and 2022 IIHF World Championships, as well as a bronze medal at the 2012 IIHF U18 World Championships.

Severson played four-plus seasons with the Western Hockey League's Kelowna Rockets, collecting 36-131-167 with 270 PIM and a cumulative +102 plus/minus rating in 260 contests from 2009-14. He was named to the WHL West Second All-Star Team in his final campaign in 2013-14 when he tallied 15-46-61 and 63 PIM in 64 regular season games and 4-14-18 in 14 playoff appearances.

Try and get Mayfield, big strong and eats up some big minutes. Don't sell the farm trying to get a goal scorer unless you can get McDavid lol. IMO no Debrincat unless we get him as a free agent, we have enough small forwards that get pushed off the puck.
