from ESPN Wire Services,
Bo Horvat scored 41 seconds into overtime and the New York Islanders defeated the Dallas Stars 3-2 on Sunday night to win new coach Patrick Roy's debut.
Alexander Romanov and Hudson Fasching also scored for New York, and defenseman Noah Dobson had two assists. Ilya Sorokin finished with 41 saves in front of a raucous home crowd.
Roy, who went 130-92-24 in three seasons coaching Colorado from 2013 to '16, was hired Saturday to replace Lane Lambert after the Islanders went 0-3-1 on a four-game trip.
"I was very nervous, I won't lie," Roy said. "You always want to win that first game, and I am very thankful to the players for the effort they put out there. I was just hoping to give a good show to our fans as well."..
"We're doing it for each other in there, and that's his main message," Horvat said of Roy. "And winning some games, that definitely helps."
Highlights are below.
My two fondest recollections of last night's game was hearing this LEATHER LUNGED person yelling out "move the puck" and could hear it through the whole arena - and it was the voice of Patrick Roy. I have never heard a coach yelling in the arena or the Coli from my seats about 2/3 of the way up on center ice behind the penalty boxes...but He could be heard often. Sometimes you hear a goalie but never a coach. and the way the place rocked when Horvat scored in OT.
My biggest takeway - MAN - is Dallas a good team! Sorokin let in one bad goal - but was elite last night - I think Dallas had at least 45 shots and many great ones. They took zero penalties and i cannot recall one instance where I think the refs should have called one on them. I just don't know all their players - but some that I have never heard of ( # 55 and # 5) had a very good game. Pavelski was Pavelski. Jamie Benn had a good game. Seguin looks healthy and Matt Duchesne even looked really good. Wedegwood in nets was always tough against NYI when he was with NJD. He is a pretty good goalie!
Lots of wood to chop for Patrick Roy, but the team played a pretty good for much of the game and I was impressed with a rebound effort of Matt Martin and Cal Clutterbuck who played very well - I think Father Time had caught up but Marty in particular had a good game.
The D is still very leaky. The duo of Bo Horvat and Matt Barzal was special again and the best player on the ice for either team was again Noah Dobson. By a lot.
For a NFL Football Sunday - the arena was pretty full. Surprising - because the Isles over the years RARELY have Sunday games. Saturday = NY Knicks and Sunday = the WEST 33rd Street Rag$. And NFL football is king in NY. I don't care too much about the NFL so I was going. Seemed so weird to have a home game on a Sunday.
But the fans were all so happy with the coach - and his comments during the Saturday Presser and the post game yesterday - he made it a point to tell the fans that He wants us to be proud of the effort he puts in and of the team. Newsday had a very nice article about the friendship Roy had with Mike Bossy - he was a neighbor of his in the Montreal area. I think we are all still in shock trying to picture Patrick Roy with an Islanders logo. We have had massive respect for him as a player. And you don't often see Hall of Fame players as NHL coaches - do we?
I am not going to look past TUE vs. Vegas - but - will point out that Isles @ Montreal on THU could be must see TV with all the local media covering this. The MAJOR Achillies heel this year - the PK - no goals against on Sunday. If he can fix this and cut down the Goals against....The Isles have a good shot to make the playoffs. But there is a lot of work to do and time to get to it.
Good luck Kas with these changes. I am excited for you. This team has been understanding performing. I love hearing Roy was so vocal.
Thanks Kasz - always enjoy reading your comments.
