Fantastically: Jiri's Time on Ice

11/23/2008 at 1:19pm EST

Poor Jiri Hudler. Poor Kid. He has been patient for 3 seasons to get top 6 forward minutes, and just when it was about to happen, Marian Hossa decides to take a pay cut to join the Wings. Which forces Hudler from the 2nd line to the 3rd line. Despite lining up with Valterri Filppula and Kirk Maltby every night, Hudler has 18 points in 19 games! It doesn’t end there. Because of the Red Wings’ depth, Hudler is only getting an average of 12:31 of ice time. Hudler notches a point every 13:22, which is second in the league for players who have played at least 15 games, behind Alex Semin (11:22). Let us understand this: Hudler is a 3rd line winger, getting half the time of any top winger in the league, and is scoring at almost a point per game rate. Whoa. Take that Dan Carcillo (who scores a point every 194 minutes).

Fantastically, I don’t see why Hudler shouldn’t be owned in your league. He is one injury away from cracking that top-6. Tomas Holmstrom isn’t exactly made of steal, Johan Franzen has had his problems, so has Henrik Zetterberg. Injury is the last case scenerio we want to see Hudler getting more time, hopefully his play will eventually force Mike Babcock’s hand in sending Hudler out more often.

If you don’t like the Sharks’ new BlackArmour jerseys, don’t tell Rob Blake. Blake contributed 4 assists in a win last night. Dan Boyle had 3 himself. Devin Setoguchi scored another goal, so did Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton. Question still lingers: are these jerseys better than the Sens’ new black jerseys? ouch.
Fantastically, the Sharks are only supposed to wear these jerseys on Thursdays; however, with a 7 goal win yesterday, why wouldn’t they wear them everyday. There are a lot of Sharks who are benefiting from Coach McClennan’s new system, especially defensemen, who, in this system are told to come in on the play and take shots from the point. The only guy who isn’t is Jonathan Cheechoo, which is a surprise because the Sharks’ new brand of hockey includes pucks to the net, which Cheech excels at. Setoguchi has taken his place as team sniper, as Seto seems to shoot whenever and wherever the puck is on his stick, explaining his 12 goals. Every top 6 forward and top 4 defenseman should be owned in your standard league.

There has been a lot of discussion about who is leading the Calder Cup race. I don’t see how you can deny Derick Brassard‘s early season play of the award. Drew Doughty has been good, playing heavy minutes, et cetera. However, Derick Brassard has been amazing this season. He started on the 3rd line and played his way onto the Rick Nash line, scoring at a point per game, playing only 14:43 per game (which translates to Brassard notching a point every 14 minutes, 3rd among players who have played 15 or more games). The main arguments for Doughty has been his poise with the puck and his 23 minutes per game. But let’s not forget who he is playing for. He has to play these kinds of minutes because the Kings aren’t exactly deep on the blueline. These kinds of traits are great for building a team, but the new NHL rewards production, which Brassard has been doing.

Grey Cup Sunday is finally here. My prediction: Hockey fans everywhere are winners because Milt Stegall isn’t playing today.
