It has been a much longer day/night than expected, but I am home and ready to get to work.

Enough doctors, time to think about our game again.

How do those four names end up in the same column lede, on the day the Edmonton Oilers made headlines by signing Virtanen to a professional tryout?

Well, read on.

Virtanen arrives at this training camp tryout after standing trial in B.C. Supreme Court in July on a count of sexual assault, stemming from a 2017 incident in Vancouver. Virtanen claimed in court that the encounter was consensual and a jury of his peers found him not guilty on July 26.

“It was very tough to go through, very hard to go through,” Virtanen told the media in Edmonton on Monday. “You learn a lot about yourself, who you are as a person. There’s a lot of self-reflection on who you are. Your self-worth… It was a long process.”

The Rangers traded Nils Lundkvist on Monday, sending the defenseman to the Stars in exchange for a first-round pick.

In return for the puck-moving blueliner, the Rangers receive a top-10 protected 2023 first-round pick that could roll into an unprotected 2024 pick. Additionally a conditional 2025 fourth-round pick becomes a third-rounder if Lundkvist records 55 points over the next two seasons.

The Calgary Flames have signed left winger Sonny Milano to a professional try-out contract, the team announced Monday.

The 16th overall pick in the 2014 NHL Draft spent the past three seasons in the Anaheim Ducks organization. He played a career-high 66 NHL games last season, picking up 34 points (14 goals, 20 assists) in the process.

Sean Couturier will miss the start of training camp for the Philadelphia Flyers because of an upper-body injury.

The 29-year-old center didn't play after Dec. 18 last season and had back surgery Feb. 11. Couturier said on Sept. 12 that he was "feeling good" and expected to be a participant when Philadelphia begins training camp Thursday.

The Flyers said Couturier is week to week and will be reevaluated during camp.

"I had a long recovery," Couturier said. "(It) took longer than I thought, a lot of ups and downs, but now I'm feeling good and ready to go. Excited to get going again."
