Defenceman Keith Yandle, who holds the NHL's iron man streak for most consecutive games played, has retired after 16 seasons.

Yandle made the announcement Tuesday on the Spittin Chiclets podcast.

The 36-year-old from Boston played 1,109 games and recorded 103 goals and 516 assists for 619 points with the Phoenix/Arizona Coyotes, New York Rangers, Florida Panthers and Philadelphia Flyers.

Yandle was drafted by the Coyotes in the fourth round, 105th overall, in 2005.

Starting March 26, 2009, Yandle played an NHL record 989 consecutive games. He surpassed Doug Jarvis (964 games) earlier this year on Jan. 25 and Yandle's streak came to an end on March 29 after the Flyers announced him as a healthy scratch for the following game.

Yandle, who had signed a one-year deal with the Flyers after being bought out by the Panthers, finished the season with one goal and 18 assists in 77 games.
