Around The League

02/23/2024 at 12:50pm EST

from Emily Kaplan of ESPN,

We're two weeks away from the NHL trade deadline, which means conversations are dialed up and trades can happen at any moment. Here's the latest on what I'm hearing on discussions going on around the league.

STEVE YZERMAN IS perhaps the most secretive general manager in the league. He won't even publicly (and for all I know privately) put a timeframe on the Red Wings' rebuild. However, in talking to sources around the league, it sounds like Yzerman is focused on making the playoffs this season, capitalizing on a strong first half.

Coach Derek Lalonde had told me what a gut punch it was for the players at this time last season when management decided yet again to collect for the future, trading away Tyler Bertuzzi, Filip Hronek, Oskar Sundqvist and Jakub Vrana. I was surprised, then, a few weeks ago when I heard that David Perron, a pending UFA and an emotional leader in the locker room, was potentially on the move. I do think there were legitimate discussions about trading Perron, but they have since quieted. In fact, I believe a contract extension for Perron could be in play either right before or after the March 8 deadline. If it doesn't get done, don't be surprised if they re-engage over the summer on a potential new contract in Detroit. That said, Yzerman has been listening to offers on his defensemen.

Connor Bedard Looking Forward To Playing Against Patrick Kane

02/20/2024 at 5:48pm EST

from Tracey Myers of the NHL's website,

Connor Bedard is a big fan of Patrick Kane, and the rookie center is not surprised the former Chicago Blackhawks forward’s patented “heartbreaker” celebration is still popular more than 10 years after Kane first did it.

“I think when you pioneer something it’s pretty cool, so whenever someone does it, it’s always traced back to him, which I think is pretty sweet,” Bedard said Tuesday.

Kane first did the celebration, drawing a heart in the air before punching it, when he completed a hat trick in a 4-3 double-overtime win against the Los Angeles Kings in Game 5 of the Western Conference Final on June 8, 2013.

Bedard paid homage to Kane with his own “heartbreaker” celebration when he scored the winning goal in Canada’s 4-3 overtime victory against Slovakia in the quarterfinals of the IIHF World Junior Championship on Jan. 2, 2022.

“He's had some cool cellys in his years,” Bedard said of Kane. “He’s an icon in the game. He’s someone who’s going to be remembered forever and he’s still playing at such an elite level.”

On his experience as a guest studio analyst with HNIC during the Toronto/Tampa series.

"Those guys make it so easy over there. They're so professional. They're so good at what they do. It was probably my one-time chance to do it; they asked me because I was in that same series a year ago (when Lalonde was a Tampa assistant) and I'm glad I did it. It was a great experience and there was some growth out of that, too.

"It was my first time doing anything like that. It helped (dealing with) the media all the time (this season), but the workflow, and the producer, and turning things around, it's not as easy as it looks."

-Derek Lalonde, head coach of the Detroit Red Wings. Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News has more ($) from Lalonde, including the World Championship and Detroit related topics.

Lalonde got a kick out of meeting Moritz Seider‘s father.

“He comes right up to me and says, ‘Hey, I’m Seider.’ I’m like. ‘What are you a music star? No first name. Like Seal or Bono?,” Lalonde said. “Those are those neat, awesome experiences that you get to know people a little bit and someday we’ll laugh about it for a while.”

Okay, I'm Good With It Now

11/04/2022 at 8:59am EDT

Many of you know Gordie Howe is the only idol I have had. No other athletes, no public figures. no one in Hollywood. Just Gordie.

As a kid I must have collected his autograph over 300 times, so much so he knew my first name and kidded with me on numerous occasions.

Thursday night Alex Ovechkin met Mark Howe, son of Gordie and a Hockey Hall of Fame member himself, for the first time.

Ovechkin showed respect with a little head bow towards Mark Howe, who showed his respect with a few shoulder and arm taps.

Those little gestures settled my soul and now I too can wish Alex Ovechkin all the best as he chases down the number two goal scorer in history. But until Ovechkin gives me an elbow to the ribs or takes my pen for the 10th time, Gordie Howe remains alone at the top of my pedestal.
