Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
That could be an adventure
Nice to see Sprong back in the lineup. Wish he wasn't buried on the 4th line.
Sprong has a lower +/- than almost half the Wings; he's -5. Veleno, for instance, is -18 with 26 points vs Sprong's 40. It appears most of the team members do give up a little more with him than without him but not a single Wing has a positive xGF%.
That isn't true of the GF%.Maata is doing well statistically. His xGF% and GF% is the best on the team. His SCF% and HDCF% is also best on the team. I'm wondering why he'd be scratched. Seider and Walman are the worst on the team giving up chances (F/A%). Larkin makes everyone play better (xGF vs xGA) while Seider makes everyone play worse.
I don't think the organization has done Seider any favors this year signing 3rd line defenders and giving him the toughest assignments. This defensive structure needs to be fixed so we're getting more chances than we give up and, maybe, bringing up some of our prospects may be what both the team and these prospects need.
Great write up Bill. Thank you for sharing.
