Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
Copp - a top six forward? With 33 points this year and a 53 point outlier two years ago? I think not!
It's a drag to not be playing playoff hockey, and it's too bad that Mo and Ray (and Larks and down the line, but the kids, esp) aren't getting actual NHL playoff experience. But they got a taste of it, and now they know how hard it is to win down the stretch.
The other youth not on the big club are, for the most part, participating in real post-season action. Griffins will probably go on a deep run - Cossa is setting records there, Simon will be back, if he isn't already, and that highly touted prospect pool will play some huge games -- together. Portland is going for a 2nd round sweep tomorrow, after sweeping their first round series, and Nate has 10 points in 7 playoff games as the 2C.
Augustine led the US World Junior team to gold, and came very close to a Frozen Four berth -- as a TRUE freshman. He'll likely be the top netminder for both squads again next year.
I'm not as gutted by the playoff miss as some, but I didn't think they had a snowball's chance at making it this year, and we missed by a (dumb) tiebreaker.
The rebuild took a big step forward this year, and it's not even over for most of our prospects.
via Sean Shapiro tweet,
Alex Lyon said it would be an honor to be asked to play for Team USA at world championships. His only international experience is as 3rd stringer at 2015 worlds
Skaters aside, there are two players who often faced 35+ shots a night in front of a porous defense. Lyon and Reimer, for all the bad nights, held this team in several games.
They were classy as all hell too, through all the changes. Kudos to them.
Lots of work ahead. Does Kane stay or not? Not sure, but hope so.
I really hope Perron doesn't come back. Way too soft defensively and incapable of not taking dumb penalties at terrible times. I liked him on the PP, but consistently seemed to hurt the team at 5 on 5 this year.
Yzerman will meet with the media tomorrow.
Thank you Paul for assembling all this
You're quite welcome.
The team did better than most of us thought this season. but as I said previously they lasted longer in the playoff chase because of Patrick Kane.🙂
