Ovechkin, after a recent hot streak, went into Tuesday's game with 16 goals this season and an astonishing 838 in his career. Gretzky had 894 goals in his legendary career....

"He's still Ovi, he's still lethal from anywhere," Walman said. "He was my favorite player growing up, just watching him. I've pretty much watched all his highlights 10 or 20 times. He's my favorite player."

The amazing thing about Ovechkin's success is his preference of a lethal one-timer and one of the hardest shots in the league, from his favorite spot on the ice near the left dot. All opponents know it, realize they must stop it, and yet Ovechkin still finds ways to overcome anything and everything to stop it.

"He always gets his looks," Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde said. "It's uncanny how he is not around it (the play) and when he gets it (the shot) off, it's special. He can score from distance, which in today's day and age, the goaltending, it's just so hard to do.

"He's a really special player and he's going to get his looks. You have to minimize it. Those types of players are going to get their (chances), you can't give them anything easy."

Ovechkin's goal-scoring always has earned the respect of Wings captain Dylan Larkin, but there are many other aspects of Ovechkin's overall game.

"What he can do on the power play, and how he physical he plays," Larkin said. "He has started scoring more. He's always dangerous. You have to watch him; he's one of those guys that you don't notice much and then he scores two as quick as he can."
