Thoughts On Detroit

04/20/2024 at 5:08pm EDT

from Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet,

Detroit GM Steve Yzerman indicated prior to the start of the season that he wasn’t sure if the Red Wings were a playoff team, and they just missed. But, as he said Thursday, he knows it is time. Yzerman laid it out very honestly. He wants to make room for prospects who will no longer be waiver-exempt, and has to know what the next contracts look like for Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider before committing to any of the unrestricted free agents.

The challenge for him is that some of those UFAs — Shayne Gostisbehere, Patrick Kane, David Perron — played very important roles and losing them would be impactful. (Gostisbehere was praised for his incredible keep-in at the blue line that saved a game against Montreal this week. An “X” follower named Stephen Geary correctly pointed out that he had a similar diving one years ago for the Flyers against Columbus. Maybe he should play shortstop for the Tigers in the summer.)

Perron enthusiastically declared his desire to return. Kane was more reserved, but was very excited discussing the future last weekend in Toronto. It’s clear he feels so much better than a year ago; he’s rejuvenated. (He and Max Pacioretty are similar in the sense that both say this will be their first “normal” summer in three years.) He really enjoys Detroit, but after a nomadic 14 months, I believe he wants to put down some hockey roots.

----Kane was more reserved, but was very excited discussing the future last weekend in Toronto

---Kane was very excited about his health and how much he enjoyed (past tense!) playing for Detroit. His every word says he is gone. I am honestly not sure why, but based on his words and on his words only, he is not coming back.

he stays, he goes, nobody on this site has any control over it, so why worry about it at all? thats my take.

For what it's worth, Ken Holland was (is?) a regular at this site, so...

Nobody on this site has any control of anything related to the team we root for, does not mean we should not discuss it

That's true of everything in the universe...we come and we go so why worry about anything?

ChetBill_H

sure. i just don't know why all these reporters are bothering to spill so much ink over "we have no idea what patrick kane is going to do."

thanks, guys. bang-up job.

ever heard of the term "click-bait"? They are just trying to drive readers to their sites/podcasts/channels, etc.

No, we don't NEED all the speculation but people crave any information, even inaccurate information. It drives today's society.

I think after getting Mo and Luc get their contracts done, Steve is going to look real hard at keeping Kane.I'd go with 3 years.Toss in some extra coin.

What Kane decides is not as important to me as what the Wings do if he leaves. Is there a UFA out there that could replace his output? Or do the Wings make a major trade where they have to give up significant assets to get Kane's replacement? Stay tuned.

I'm not sure there is a good option B. Perhaps under this scenario they look for a better defensive forward with SOME offense. They've got make team defense better and keeping the goals against down should limit the loss of Kane.

I think the trade market might interest Yzerman. He's got a glut of defensemen on the NHL and more coming up in the next couple of years. Trading some for the right forward would make a lot of sense. They don't really have a lot of high prospect wingers.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
