Getting Dylan Larkin back healthy is our trade deadline deal. After all hockey players dont grow on trees. We kicked some tires but decided we like our team.

if you dont understand the joke then you never will.

Not going to be able to listen so I'm curious if anyone able to post important notes from the presser.

Really not sure what he can say other then, "I like our team". The most boring deadline for the wings that I can ever remember. I'm not surprised, but I'm a little disappointed.

Going to focus on signing RFA and getting ballpark contract terms (length) and then use that (short term or long term structures) to give UFAs an answer shortly AFTER the finish of the season if the Wings can bring them back. But knows not every UFA is coming back.

was focusing on getting a forward (to replace Kostin) but didnt want to give up the asking price given the talent in GR already.

Not going to hold back Berggren if it is what the team needs (Berggren is offensive but may need checking defensive forward instead was my take) to make the playoffs but is aware of the 80 game (4 more NHL games) need to expose to waivers.

Happy with development in GR this year.

Yzerman say a forward will be called up, Edvinsson and Bergie getting big minutes and playing like the Wings wanted them to play.

Yzerman likes his ufa group and has talked to most of the agents;

First he needs to settle the RFAs, short or long term.  Then will focus on UFAs.

I understand his point about give up high picks. They still need them to complete the rebuild. While I'm a bit disappointed we couldn't get some actual help, I get it.

Paul

Yzerman on Berg... 4 more NHL games and he would have to clear waivers if sent down again.  Yzerman says they will deal with it when the time comes.

With Larkin out, the GM stresses team defense is key.

from Sam Stockton of The Hockey News,

At his post-deadline press conference explaining his business, GM Steve Yzerman emphasized that choice by touting the Red Wings' internal depth, saying that he would rather preserve the team's long-term future by holding onto its prospects rather than flipping those young players for rentals. "Giving up a first or second or third round pick for a [depth player], we're better off bringing up our guys from Grand Rapids for that," he said.

He added that he believes the Red Wings' status in the Eastern Conference standing as well as emotional state of the locker room did not invite significant changes. "I think the atmosphere within the team...is we have very good team spirit," Yzerman said. "There's a lot of enthusiasm. You hear the players talk about how much they're enjoying playing there, so that's encouraging, and they have got us into a good spot here."

Yzerman also emphasized that he did not want to pursue rentals at the expense of the current prospect arsenal, saying "We're building a nucleus of young prospects that are going to be a part of this team...We're slowly seeing some of those kids in GR not only develop from junior and college and Europe into good American League players, they're just slowing moving up the pipeline...It's only a matter of time before they're in the NHL and playing regularly."

When asked about some of the Red Wings' most NHL-ready prospects (specifically Simon Edvinsson and Jonatan Berggren, both of whom have spent the bulk of the year with the Griffins), Yzerman explained that "sending [players like Edvinsson and Berggren] to play in GR this year wasn't necessarily about this year.

This was quite the expected result this year.  I wish we acquired a gritty, scoring power forward or two, but Yzerman and his staff have more than enough to work with.

While I understand the desire is to get the RFAs re-signed ASAP, that is rarely how it actually happens. I expect one or two of those to drag out all the way to training camp. Discussions will happen but the reality is the UFA action date happens much sooner. I'm hoping they find a way to keep Kane and Sprong. Ghost isn't going to fit unless they can move a defenseman under contract for next season. Money will probably keep them from re-signing Perron.
