In the third, the Wings were down 5-3 with 6 minutes to go, scored 2 goals quickly to force overtime.
Pittsburgh gets the extra point in overtime with a 6-5 win.
Detroit goals are below.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
One point is better than none. I guess.🥲
It is, it keeps things within a game reach. A loss tonight as you said would have pretty much put things out of reach with only six more points available.
I will just repeat myself, because Im not very bright and I dont come up with thoughts very often, but this team does try hard to overcome its dumbass mistakes. But you cant consistently win enough playing that way.
Blah. If they keep turning over the darn puck Toronto will eat them alive, but they have a chance of winning or coming away with a point there.
I dont know how often Sprong has played point on the PowerPlay, but that was horrendous and even if that was his first time, he should know better. As much as coach has talked about playing smart plays that was just awful.
He did not play the point (Seider was), but that pass probably ended his career in Detroit
they're probably out. let's be real about it.
this is what i predicted last fall. they brought in a bunch of 2nd-3rd tier vets hoping to speed things up in the rebuild at the cost of prospect development and their 2024 draft position, only to finish 18th-22nd or whatever it's going to be.
super frustrating. yzerman and his staff definitely deserve criticism for this.
As Yogi would say: It ain't over till it's over! :-)
fair, but sneaking into WC2 is generally no way to win a Cup. what was the point of this? why did they ever think it would work?
Yes
Yes. For sure.👍
Too bad the Pens don't play Chicago again.
Absolutely frustrating, the game was there for the taking. The good news Raymond is becoming a super star.
And his agent can't wait to talk contract this summer. :-)
But you just have to love Raymond's competitiveness and enthusiasm. It's fun to watch.
Steve Yzerman needs to change his management style. He signs all these FAs and then Kane to only leave him and the team out to dry. You have Kasper in the AHL and you actually bring up Czarnik and Reese. How awful is that decision. Yeah, they really helped not!
So surprised of him of all people.
Not bringing Edvinsson earlier looks like a big mistake now too
The usual suspects made the usual mistakes again that ultimately cost us the game. However, Raymond was an absolute beast! What a game from him and nice to see the wings not give up when behind.
If one of those 2 posts that beat Ned clean is a goal, or if the ref doesn't blow that tripping call, or if Lyon can make 1 more reasonable save, we probably win that.
That result sucked, but it was great to see our young guys step up and have a game tonight.
It's not looking great, but there's still a chance...
Yeah, Gus hits a post and we immediately allow a shorthanded goal, that was terrible. What an effort to come back after that though
The Islanders and the Pens deserve the final two spots in the east, let's be real. The wings had more chances than they deserved to stay in the mix and they couldn't do it. It's beyond frustrating.
These next few days will contribute to make things interesting but I'm certain this is the final week Wings fans will have something to cheer for. The Wings simply will not climb over Pitt.
Oh, and if this team could figure out how to take some ownership of the puck in ot, we wouldn't be in this position. It's amazing how halfway through the year they started watching ot rather than playing it.
Gus and Kane should not be on the ice in OT at the same time and Lyon has to freeze the puck and allow a change to get Larkin/Ray back on the ice.
Raymond played a great game today but let's not get ahead of ourselves. He's still a double-digits minus player. He's scoring at a 70-point, 30-goal pace, and his shooting percentage is a bit inflated right now. He's clearly a guy we'll want on the team for a long time coming, but he's not exactly __yet__ a 9M winger.
I am curious where his contract comes in - do they give him 7/8 years, or keep it on the shorter side and hedge their bets?
I think we as fans are excited to potentially have a second 30 goal scorer (something we haven't had since the 2008-2009 season), but look around the league at the good teams...they have players (plural) well into the thirties/forties/fifties.
The promising thing to me is, Raymond has put in the work to become a better player and it shows. His strengthening alone has made him much more competitive and harder on the puck. To me that shows a commitment (as opposed to a Mantha...).
6 Years at $6 mil/yr is where I could see it coming in at. If he has Copp's agent, it'll be more like 6 years at $14 mil/yr.
Debrincat is getting $7.875M CAP hit and an $8.25M salary right now (4 yrs). He's got 63 pts and I'd sure rather have Raymond (at the moment).
I'll be shocked if anyone gets more than Larkin, in terms of dollars or... term.
I think if anyone gets more than Larkin, it will be Seider. Not necessarily because he's "better" but because of the potential and market value. I suspect he'll come in below Larkin's value though.
Raymond is going to be tough for management and fans. It wouldn't surprise me if this one goes right up to training camp. Nor would it surprise me if they end up with a bridge deal.
Keep in mind a team isn't paying for just past performance with the next contract. It is as much about potential.
There's no one on the roster (currently at least) who should make more than Larkin, and I don't see Yzerman doing that. Seider/Raymond are certainly not at that level. Not yet at least.
Do not think anyone stated $9M. And the other question is why is he a minus in double digits?
Him or his teammates? Empty nets? So many factors.
Jack Hughes is a double digit minus. Others as well.
