The Detroit Red Wings might be parting ways with Evgeny Svechnikov, their first-round pick from 2015 who has battled through injuries and struggled to get a foothold in the NHL.
The Red Wings will not tender a qualifying offer to Svechnikov by Monday’s 5 p.m. deadline, making him an unrestricted free agent.
They are open to signing him to a two-way contract if he doesn’t sign elsewhere when free agency begins on Wednesday, Svechnikov’s agent, Todd Diamond, said.
“We’ll see what things look like (in the market) and regroup from there,” Diamond said. “It’s been a while (for Svechnikov in the organization), he’s had a lot of injuries. He could have gotten a new opportunity last season. He played hurt. It didn’t happen.
“Maybe it’ll work out for the best and he’ll get a chance to compete with another team.”
