First question about bringing back Babcock to Detroit.
Part of the reason Babcock left the Red Wings in 2015 is because he questioned who would take over for Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk. That was what Babcock said after the Game 7 loss at Tampa Bay in 2015, when the Wings were eliminated in Round 1 of the playoffs. Babcock wasn’t interested in coaching a team that was headed into a rebuild then, and the rebuild is still under way today. Holland offered Babcock $3.25 million a year for four years in 2015. Babcock instead signed an eight-year, $50 million contract with the Leafs, who have not won the Stanley Cup since 1967, the longest current drought in the NHL.
Ending that appealed to Babcock’s ego. But even with a roster that in 2016 gained No. 1 overall pick Auston Matthews, Babcock failed to coach the Leafs to playoff success — they were eliminated in the first round each of the past three seasons.
Wings general manager Steve Yzerman has shown no indication he is going to make a coaching change this season. The organization likes the progress young players have made under Jeff Blashill, and recognizes he does not have much of a roster to work with.
