At few minutes after the Detroit Red Wings begin their scrimmages, Steve Yzerman makes his way to the family room that overlooks the practice facility inside Little Caesars Arena. Often, someone in his inner circle already is there, sitting behind the glass.
Players notice.
Yzerman’s first season as Wings general manager has been about observing. He delayed naming a captain and has kept the coaching staff intact.
At the same time, Yzerman has made multiple changes that signal to players they are under constant evaluation. He has used the trade deadline, waivers and free agency to add nine players of his choice to the lineup.
“His presence is felt every day in our locker room and it’s a good thing,” Dylan Larkin said. “It’s holding guys accountable. Everyone wants to impress him, because he’s our new GM. It’s been good for our team.”
