Videos- The Talk After An OT Loss In San Jose

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

... They wrapped up their three-game trip Tuesday at SAP Center with a 3-2 loss in overtime to the San Jose Sharks, settling for two out of six points. Logan Couture score a minute into the extra time.

:"I thought we did a lot of good things," defenseman Nick Leddy said. :"This has always been a tough rink. They come hard. We had a pretty good start, then sat back a little bit....

"I thought we were taking the game to them early," coach Jeff Blashill said. "We gave up a 2-on-1 six or seven minutes into the period, and from there we didn’t play nearly as good. I just thought a whole bunch of individual players didn’t seem to have lots of gas. Didn’t have lots of energy. We didn’t seem to be very strong on the puck. We were fortunate to get a point."

Credit that point to Nedeljkovic, who made 37 saves.

"He gave us a chance to steal one for sure," Blashill said.

Seeking to ameliorate the turnaround of crossing three time zones ahead of having a game on the slate Thursday, the Wings were scheduled to fly home Wednesday, one week after arriving in southern California.

“It was nice to get out here, seeing some places, getting in the ocean as a team, too,” Seider said. “It was pretty cool experience.”

That was the Covid game, pretty sick.  No one has any jump.  I get it, to play dull boring defensive hockey on the road and jump at the chances the other team gives you.  I shut it off after they were bungling the two man advantage, must of scored after I shut it off.  Oh well didn’t sleep either.

Crazy winning rate needed in the Eastern Conference still just to qualify for the Wild Card.  It really started out hot but has continued through almost the half way point.

The .625 pt pct equals about 102 points over the 82 game season.  In Detroit’s hay-day some teams were getting in with 88 points.  This has migrated slowly upward over the years to 92 and 94 and 96, especially after this realignment and Wild Card system.

Where do these extra standings points at the top come from?  The bottom of course.  In the East now three teams are below .400 including one below .300.  Below .400 not too many years ago was a Mendoza line that maybe one per year fell below.

I had worked up some numbers on that but can’t find them right now.  The bottom line would be that the worst teams are much worse than they used to be and food for the feeding frenzy of the playoff contenders.  I’ll try to find the limited standings numbers I did look up.

I gotta post this because I believe that scouting is letting us down.  As I said before, when we go into LA you got to put some beef in your lineup, in fact most western teams are beefed up with size and nastiness.  The scouting crew should be looking at rosters and video of upcoming teams, I hate to see Dylan Larkin fighting, the heart and soul of the team, Stevie never fought.  It shows bigtime when Dylan is out of the lineup, we can afford a Zadina sitdown for a utility player like Witouski in a game or two.  Smith can’t do it all.  Check out the size of some of those teams, we got another one coming in Thursday, the Winnipeg Jets, big, nasty team, guys like Raymond, Fabbri, Namestikov,  they are discussed in their room because they are our offense on each line.  This is not a gentlemen’s league any more, the speed, size and weight can put you six feet under.  Coaching has got to tend to this or we will wimp off the ice in shame.
