Today’s Practice

via Ansar Khan tweet,

RedWings on ice for practice before tomorrow’s game vs. Buffalo and LCA. Staal is back after missing three games. DeKeyser (COVID protocol) and Veleno (upper body injury) not skating.

added 11:48am, Khan,

lines at practice:
Bertuzzi-Larkin-Raymond
Fabbri-Suter-Smith
Namestnikov-Rasmussen-Erne
Gagner-Rowney-Zadina
Notable that Smith and Zadina switched spots, at least for start of practice.
They’ve been rotating the seven healthy defensemen, using various pairs.

power play units:
1. Bertuzzi (net front), Fabbri (bumper), Larkin-Raymond (flanks), Seider (point).
2. Erne (net front), Suter (bumper), Hronek-Zadina (flanks), Leddy (point).
Wings no power plays first time this season Wednesday vs. STL, 7 in 6 games, 13 for opponents

added 12:29pm, Below find Adam Erne and Jeff Blashill videos after the practice.

Fabbri-Suter-Smith

Well, I guess we’ll see if Smith actually can play the role of a power forward. Should be interesting.

Gagner-Rowney-Zadina

Maybe someone should tell Khan(!) that Rowney isn’t a center. I’m guessing Gagner will center that line.

And this is definitely a wake-up call for Zadina. Hopefully playing against the Sabres’ 4th line will give him a little more space and let him get some of his confidence back.

Blashill says Veleno day to day, Staal did practice but is questionable for tomorrow.

Blashill says Smith gets a look with Fabbri and Suter because of his size and net-front ability.

Just a few days ago, Smith wasn’t good enough in his own end to sniff 10 mins.

Now he gets a bump up to the 2nd line?

This is the same old Blash stupidity from “We have to get Abby going” put him on the top line piano puller BS.

And when they can’t complete 2 passes in a row and look like garbage he will call it a process.

I’d kinda rather put Erne up with Suter and Fabbri. He can score when he has someone who can get him the puck, and Ras seems to get tied up or knocked off the puck immediately in the O zone, with very little pushback. Erne’s not as big as Smith, obvs, and it’ll be interesting to see what he can do, too.

Erne has clearly better vision and playmaking
touch for a bigger guy than Smith. Also a better skater.

But I guess they like that third line (sometimes second or
2b in mins) and want some continuity. How to get Rasmussen to play bigger
and more assertively? Good question. Not sure how you teach aggression and
center of gravity/strength on skates.

Smith may be off the second line after two shifts,
but what it does do, other than either wake up Zadina or hurt his
confidence even more, is really change the look and feel of
teams are used to seeing from Detroit up front.
Does that mean Smith will be a penalty magnet.
Or help contribute to goals going the other way on turnovers?
Does he create some chaos around the net Suter and Fabbri or a D
jumping up can cash in on? I like giving guys real mins and a real
chance now and then. You don’t always find out what you need to going:
Ok, 8 mins was ok; here’s 8:30; ok 8:30 was ok…

I honestly have more confidence in Erne than Smith but I have no problems with mixing things up a bit. Smith has played better recently but he’s got to show it for a few more games to have me convinced he’s turned things around.

I still like what I see from Zadina but he has to put the puck in the net. Best of luck to him.

Playing on a 4th line does not help Zadina, I think he is a lot more important to “get going” than Smith. I do understand that second line is not producing and change has to be made and I agree the easiest would be to just switch Erne and Zadina.

Putting Erne on that line is the best idea.
