One Less Left Handed Defenseman For The Wings

from Max Bultman of The Athletic,

In Detroit, meanwhile, the selection has two ripples: First, it means Troy Stecher is staying put. The 27-year-old right-shot defenseman signed a two-year deal with the Red Wings last fall but had been considered the favorite for Seattle to pick due in part to his favorable advanced-metric profile. The Kraken front office has an analytics-driven reputation, so the thought was that Stecher would have made for a natural pick, and that belief only amplified throughout the day as Seattle’s defense picks leaked and many were tilted toward left-handed shots.

Instead, though, he’ll stay with the Red Wings, leaving Detroit with a deep right side between Stecher, returning minutes leader Filip Hronek, young defender Gustav Lindstrom and top prospect Moritz Seider, who is expected to make his NHL debut this season.

Cholowski’s departure does leave a hole on the left side, though, with just Danny DeKeyser and newly acquired Nick Leddy under contract for this season.

Detroit certainly could opt to play one of the four right-shot defensemen on their off-hand if those six are the players they want in the lineup, but they also have room (and the cap space) to sign at least one free-agent defenseman, whether it be for depth or as a projected regular.

You pretty much know what you’re getting out of most players by age 23-24.

I think Cholo could stick around in the league as a bottom paring guy with sheltered minutes but he hasn’t shown he has much else to offer, maybe be a second pp guy. But it’s a low risk move by Seattle. Maybe a change of scenery and a new system they’ll get 20-25 pts from him

Also PLENTY of left handed UFA dmen to choose from in FA. Not worried there

I am curious as to the update of progression on Antti Tuomisto and Albert Johansson from the 2019 draft. Have not seen any news as to how they stand currently in the organization.

In once Detroit related news, Brendan Smith will be available, NYR not interested in bringing him back.

Maybe he’ll succeed as a goalie smile

McIsaac is a left shot, and he should get at least a few games on call-up this season. He looked pretty solid in the Griffins games I watched on local TV this past spring.

Paul, Kenny’s heard to be interested in Smith. Giggle. Can anyone say, veteran deal?

Johansson play in the SEL and internationally for Sweden. He signed his ELC last year, but stayed home so that first year was slid to an extra year and he’s now 20 so playing in NA is probably a likely outcome. From what I’ve read he’s got a real good outlook. He was in the SEL at 18 which is tough but then add this:

“He was so good in his performance, we couldn’t hold him outside,” Färjestad coach Johan Pennerborn said this week. “Just had to let him play.”
