from Kevin Allen of Detroit Hockey Now,
Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman says prospects must earn their way to the show. He specifically says he would like to see them “dominate” at the American Hockey League level before being called up. Jonatan Berggren may have done just that Tuesday night.
The 2018 second-round pick produced four assists in the Grand Rapids Griffins’ 5-3 win against the Cleveland Monsters. Berggren had three primary assists among the four. He has 11 points in his past eight games.
Berggren, 21, now has eight goals and 19 assists for 27 points in 30 games for the Griffins. Last season, Berggren was a Top 10 scorer in Sweden’s top league with 45 points in 49 games for Skelleftea.
The Red Wings would like to see Jonatan Berggren add some weight to his frame. But the Red Wings rank 24th in NHL scoring with an average of 2.68 goals per game. If Berggren continues to produce at the AHL level, the Red Wings will have to consider bringing him up.

Note, Saturday's game in Nashville for the Wings now has an 8:30pm ET start. It was pushed back a half hour due to the NFL playoffs.

Berggren is 21 and was 21 on Sept 15th when he signed his ELC; therefore, he is ineligible for an extra year of ELC due to a slide if he plays 9 games or under.
In order to slide a player has to have been 18 or 19 years of age until Dec 31st of the signing year and play in 9 games or less at the NHL level (playoffs included).
So there is no reason to limit him to 9 games for that purpose.

Steve Yzerman: The Detroit Red Wings today claimed center Gemel Smith off waivers from the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
