At First, Jakub Vrana Didn’t Like The Trade To Detroit

from Bob Duff of Detroit Hockey Now,

Originally, though, Vrana didn’t think that leaving Washington for Detroit was a capital idea. According to his longtime youth coach Zbynek Zvadil, Jakub Vrana was initially quite sour about the idea.

Speaking to Czech news service idnes.cz, Zvadil told a tale that gave indications that it wasn’t love at first sight when Vrana made the move into the Red Wings lineup.

“He didn’t count on it at all, but it just happened,” Zvadil said of the trade. “He was a little mad about it....

“Washington is a nice city and Detroit has taken it away due to the fall of the car industry,” Zvadil explained. “He loved Washington, (the city) got along with him.”...

“In Detroit, it’s going to be the other way around on the ice,” Zvadil said. “He’s playing in the front line, going to (the) power play. They put together a new team. If he gets space, he will score a lot.”

Having lived in the suburbs in both places at a similar age…he has a point. One even beyond moving from a club with contention hopes to one with no hope anytime soon. But there are several issues with that…

In DC so many people you meet and make friendships with are there temporarily.

The town swells with tourists during certain parts of the year and empties out around Thanksgiving until Jan (especially true around the Capitol, GW, Georgetown, and American University).

Protests and security conferences can make life miserable (like when they close down streets and have ID checks/car inspections to allow access to roads, sidewalks, and buildings). Getting stuck in traffic because of presidents motorcade sucks…it’s like a long freight train.

And the cost of living is way different too. A 250k house in Detroit’s inner ring suburbs goes there for about $650k. A $300 house here in a preferred suburb goes for $1M there.

Here’s another example my expenses in Alexandria (10 years ago) were:

rent was a little over 2,000 per month (today it is $2,963 same place)
parking at the apartment was 100 per month then (no idea now except it will be more)
parking in DC was 150 per month (it’s about 250 now….DC’s metro didn’t start service until 8am on Saturdays so if you worked in an office that wasn’t M-F you had to pay this as a lot of the lots are pay by month only).

yet DC has reliable mass transit system and I could walk there from my apt so getting anywhere in the city was possible….so being able to zone out or listen to an audiobook, music, podcast whatever instead of having to deal with rush hour traffic does make a difference in the quality of life. You walk more (especially downtown) and there a lot more public sporting leagues so you get more exercise—even if they close your softball fields and make the MLK monument out of it. Museums, concerts, and galleries aren’t even comparable to other cities. Lots more bars and clubs in DC. Finally the weather is nicer for most of the year.

If I made millions per year I’d rather of stayed in DC too. Which is something the Wings need to have in the back of their minds when Vrana approaches UFA in July 2024.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
