Xavier Ouellet Wants To Make His Mark With The Montreal Candiens

from Olivier Beauregard at Canadiens.com,

Xavier Ouellet has been on a bit of an emotional rollercoaster in recent months.

First, because the Red Wings elected to buy out his contract and part ways with the 25-year-old defenseman instead of keeping him in the fold.

Ouellet is hoping to put that chapter of his career behind him - permanently.

"As a player, you don't really want to look behind you too much. Things didn't work out and I was bought out by the Red Wings. It was disappointing, and it's something that you never want to happen," he explained. "But, it comes with the job. That's the way things go in hockey."

Come July 1, though, Ouellet signed a one-year, two-way contract with the team he grew up cheering for.

"I'd just experienced some disappointment and then a new opportunity came my way," mentioned Ouellet, who was born in Bayonne, France. "I was so happy."

He’s right that his career is likely an almost every-game, every day audition for a spot
in the lineup or even on a roster.

But he’s playing ahead of Karl Alzner.
So he’s apparently more mobile or useful overall than one of the
bigger defensive free agents signings, albeit in a weak class, of the last
couple years.

Meanwhile, Mike Reilly appears to be a player for Montreal after being
discarded by Minnesota.

Sometimes it really is significantly about fit and opportunity.

You only have to look at Vegas to see the potential in a group of hard working underdogs. They were given a fresh start with a good coach.

Meh, they had two players that basically overachieved significantly, one hugely though (Karlsson).  The other was Fleury randomly becoming the Fleury of old for a while, at least last season.

No doubt they’re coached well.  But good luck to them if Karlsson doesn’t equal what he did last season.

As for Ouellet… he can probably be a bottom pairing d-man in the NHL just fine.  That is, if nobody pushes him.  If a team has any young d-men knocking at the NHL door, he’s going to get pushed out again.  He seems to have hit his ceiling already.

Ouellet had 2 goals in a game not long ago. May have been a preseason game.
